Measles vaccine for seniors?

Is it needed, given that the vaccine wasn’t available when we were children? I am 77.

I've been wondering about this. I was born in 1946 and don't remember if I ever had the measles. I know I had chickenpox, but that's about the only one I'm sure of. My husband was born in 1936 and we don't know if he had it either. Checking titers is probably something for our to-do list.

Talking about polio—when I was six, my mother contracted it and was in the hospital for 300 days. That was in 1952. Back then, they kept you in the hospital until you were finished doing therapy. She had one arm and the opposing leg affected, wore a brace for a long time, and sometimes fell—usually when she was tired. She could use her hand on her affected arm, but she couldn't raise that arm without using the good arm to lift it. As she got older, she got weaker and ended up in a wheelchair.

I was an only child, and we lived in the country. At age six, I spent most of my time with my mom and we even slept together (she and I lived with my maternal grandparents, and my grandparents and I were quarantined for two weeks after my mother fell ill). If I had it, it had to have been very mild. The aunt of my best friend in high school got it when she was a child, and her legs never developed. From the hips up, she was a normal-sized adult, but both legs were atrophied and she was in a wheelchair. I've always known I was incredibly lucky not to have contracted polio when I was that young.

And I'm old enough that I had measles. I remember the then protocol - staying in a room with the blinds almost all the way down on the belief that light could damage the eyes. I was 7; it was 1947. The War was over, but not much had recovered.

and truly, how in the world would we know what shots we got as kids, other than the old polio vaccine scar on shoulder?

I had the measles too. Not sure which kind, but recall getting Rubella vaccine at school. Guess I’ll check with my PC.

I have a friend who is 58 years old, who’s getting a 2 part measles vaccine.

I'm about to turn 83. I took female hormones through my 80th year. Couldn't get a Dr to Rx them after that. I also couldn't get permission from my insurance company to get tested for osteoporosis. My hair is falling out and I'm growing chin hairs and having hot flashes. You gotta die of something, and cancer is better than Alzheimer's. And women taking hormones don't get cancer that often. So I want to take them again (I'm also worried about osteoporosis). I'm suspicious that men are allowed to take testosterone so they can stop feeling impotent but women are denied hormones because we're women, if you know what I mean. I want better research into older women and hormones.

Hello. Medicare pays for a bone density every other year. Can't you ask your physician for some blood work pertaining to what may be going on. Let your physician know your symptoms. Blood work cannot be added to your Medicare yearly physical. It would have to be done prior to that. Take care.

A close friend of mine, a nurse-practitioner, said she was going to take female hormones until she got breast cancer. So she did. And she did - get breast cancer, that is. Total mastectomy, loss of all hair, difficult recovery, long-term treatment to keep from recurrence. Yes, she's a near neighbor whom I've known since 1978. I'll take my chin hairs over what she has had to go through.

I’m old enough that I had the “red” measles, the “German”’measles, mumps and chicken pox. May have missed whooping cough and polio which some friends had caught. Only knew one person who had ever had smallpox. My great aunt was made permanently deaf as an 8 year old by the measles.
