MDS + Hemochromatosis
Hi, has anyone been diagnosed with MDS and hemochromatosis. Currently have a Dr. in Colorado that is retiring and thinking of going to MD. Anderson or Mayo Clinic. Does anyone know of someone who specializes in BOTH?
Thanks!

Hi Golddust
Have you put hemochromatosis in the search bar above? I was a platelet donor before i was diagnosed with MDS and had a transplant. Iron in my blood was something i thought of often. 600 donations and i failed my iron 1 time and thought about it every time. I have read on this diagnosis and expect Mayo here and MD Anderson have experience with people like yourself with both diagnoses.
Welcome to Mayo Connect, @golddust With your history of MDS and hemochromatosis seeking care with a larger teaching/research clinic/hospital, such as Mayo would find a deeper bench of specialists.
From my own experience with Mayo-Rochester, the doctors work collaboratively across departments to bring in specialists from other disciplines when necessary. For instance, the hematologist oncologist for your MDS could bring in the expertise of a liver specialist to collaborate for your hemochromatosis if needed.
I actually saw this in action! LOL I know this sounds like the beginning of a joke, but I had a hematologist, a hepatologist, and a neurological pathologist walk into my room to confer with me. No chest thumping…each of them were top in their field and discussed my case with me and each other as though we were old friends. What a unique experience.

You don’t need a referral but it can be helpful for your doctor to have some input. The information is on the Mayo site as you enter your information.
It’s challenging when a doctor you’ve known and trusted for your condition retires and now you have to start from scratch. With a complex blood condition you want someone with the expertise to get you the best treatment,
Is your retiring doctor a specialist in both fields? Are you currently in treatment for your MDS?
