Mayo Patients with IBD: Your Feedback on Clinical Communications

Mayo Clinic’s Center for Digital Health is seeking feedback from current patients or prospective patients of Mayo Clinic, who have inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). IBD includes Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Patients who meet the eligibility requirements (see below) will be asked to take part in a 30–40-minute interview via Zoom. If you meet these criteria, we invite you to complete the survey linked below.

Study Details:

Our research aims to gain valuable insights into the experiences of Mayo Clinic patients or prospective patients who have a diagnosis of IBD; specifically asking questions related to clinical communications received by the patient via text message, email, and over the phone instructions with care teams. Your participation will contribute to a better understanding of the patient experience and create a better future for those like you.

Eligibility:

  • Adult patient or prospective patient at any Mayo Clinic site within the past year or plans to be seen at Mayo Clinic in the next month for IBD (inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn's disease, or ulcerative colitis)
  • Adult patient or prospective patient of Mayo Clinic who has received clinical communications from Mayo Clinic via text, email, or over the phone regarding appointments or surgery (e.g., appointment reminders, pre-surgical instructions, pre-check in reminders, etc.)
  • Need access to a stable internet connection via computer, smartphone, or tablet to take part in a virtual Zoom call with Mayo Clinic researchers
  • Willing to take part in a 30–40-minute interview via Zoom with Mayo Clinic researchers to better understand your experience

Survey Content:

The screener survey will inquire about your experience with a focus on clinical communications and communication you may have received before, during, and after care at Mayo Clinic. Your responses will remain confidential amongst the project team. Your participation is voluntary.

If you are eligible and interested in participating, follow the survey link at: https://ethn.io/33474

I have been going to Mayo for years. I have established doctors there. I have used their dieticians in the past. Yesterday, they called and cancelled by zoom appointment because, I am told by the doctor, that they are not allowed to cross certain state lines for these calls. I have gastroparesis and I'm down to 105lbs. This is nuts! It's not like I'm a first time patient. I just made 2 trips to Mayo in December of 2023 and January of this year. I go every other year for my bone scan and I'm part of the pancreas study. Where did this rule come from???

Hi @suemer,
Virtual care (Zoom appointment) is available for out-of-state patients IF the provider you are seeing is licensed in the state where you live. This is a policy that Mayo Clinic (and all health care providers) must follow according to federal and state executive orders and guidance.

When the Federal health emergency was lifted May 11th, 2023, access to virtual appointments changed across the nation. Not all appointments are permitted virtually.

It sounds like you live in a state in which your Mayo provider is not licensed. I encourage you to contact your team by phone or the patient portal to find out what options you may have.
