Mayo Clinic Second Opinion
We came to Mayo Clinic this past month to get a second opinion on my husband Joe SCC cancer of unknown primary (CUP) We kept our expectations reasonable as statistically our odds were against us that they would find the primary. We also wanted to see if they could offer anything that we weren’t able to get in Augusta, Ga.
Our experience was excellent. Joe had already had tonsillectomy and removal of tumor neck dissection at AU. Mayo further recommended TORS as was recommended at AU. So we stayed and did that. Still unable to find the primary. They have recommended the same as AU back home before we came, radiation and chemo. They were in agreement that if done in a timely manner treatment at home was an option.
We met with radiation at Mayo but still were keeping in touch with our excellent ENT surgeon in Augusta, GA. It was a very difficult decision to make but we decided to have radiation etc back home. Better to be miserable in his own home.
We leave Mayo Clinic satisfied that no stone was left unturned and also confirmed that the care that we got and are getting in Augusta will be on target. We leave humbled and grateful to all the excellent staff and the entire place. The experience was close to a spiritual one and I am profoundly thankful.

@maryannecrawford Your post is so uplifting. You have so captured my feelings about my own cancer care at Mayo Clinic. Indeed, I was and I still am grateful and the experiences I have had at Mayo Clinic do feel spiritual to me.
How is your husband now that you all are back in Augusta?
@maryannecrawford How wonderful to be reassured you know what you are addressing and will be following the best course of action! There is a peace in knowing you are doing all you can and comfort being able to continue your journey free from any distractions otherwise.
Ditto to @naturegirl5, I continue to be grateful for how my care at Mayo Clinic helps me live my best life, mind body and spirit.
It sounds like you are in awesome hands! I hope you stay plugged in here and provide updates.
Thank you for your kind words. We just got home yesterday. Thank goodness for neighbors who will turn on AC ! We meet our oncology team this week and will begin 6 weeks radiation and chemo soon thereafter. We are in the middle of our journey. I have a lot to learn so I’ll continue to connect on “ Connect”. @maryannecrawford You have wonderful neighbors!
I love how you use “we” for meeting with the oncology team and starting radiation and chemotherapy. You, your husband, and your family are all on this journey together. Your husband is fortunate to have you with him every step of the way.
