Mammogram with breast implants
Hi all,
I have ten year old "gummy bear" silicone breast implants. I am scared to get a Mammogram since there is a possibility of rupture with older implants. I feel like there is very little breast tissue to scan anyway. (My breasts are mostly the implants!). Has anyone experienced a rupture from Mammogram? What do you think of the idea of doing an ultrasound of
the breasts instead of a Mammogram to avoid the risk of rupture? Please let me know your thoughts. Many thanks everyone!

@hello1234 hi! Just wanted to see if you had your ultrasound yet and made out? Also just an update that I did visit my breast surgeon who did my lumpectomy for a follow up. I asked for her opinion on replacing the breast implants vs explant . She advised me that me in my situation with already having a pocket made and radiation to one of my breast, exchanging for new ones would be better than an explant. She explained why and a lot of her experience with breast inplants and explant made sense. Apparently after radiation to the breast explant could cause fluid in the pocket coming back and you keep having to get that drained. I mean even with implants you risk capsular contraction etc. but at this point I am already set up surgery for November 21. And my surgeon told me I really do not have to make a decision till the day of surgery. I talked to my plastic surgeon and he said I can even go a little smaller if I want to. Just not a whole cup size because then you run the risk of that pocket not being filled and I guess filling that space I’d important . So I think thats just the way I am going to go. There’s no guarantee with any of it. I was originally leaning towards explant but I just don’t think I am now. Plus my breast surgeon did say the radiated side will sit up higher and thats the side right now thats deflated. So who knows what the other side would look like once the implant was taken out. Too many unknowns for me. Hope you are doing well and just wanted to give and get an update! 🙂

Thank you sooo much for this wonderfully detailed, informative and helpful post. You are amazing! I can understand your desire to keep things as trouble free as possible. That's my philosophy too! My breast ultrasound found a lesion on the right breast. The report says it does not look suspicious, but I should get a follow up ultrasound in 6 months. My primary physician offered a referral to a breast specialist. Do you think I should see a specialist or just go in 6 months for another ultrasound?
@hello1234 you are welcome! Thats good news! Sounds like you do not have any thing to really worry about. As far as seeing a breast specialist that would be a good idea if you at all are concerned about anything regarding your breast in general or of course the ultrasound finding. Me personally, I would consult with the specialist because if anything ever comes up, I would have someone to go to. But you could also just wait and do your follow up too in 6 months. If you have questions or concerns I would see the specialist. If not, I would just wait the 6 months, hope this helps 🙂

2 Reactions@christylv Good advice as always! I think on Monday I will call the specialist's office to see how difficult it is to get an appointment. I will keep you posted on how it all turns out. I really appreciate all of your excellent information regarding explant and swapping a little smaller (or same size). That was very valuable information. Thank you again and let's chat again soon!
