Magnesium or mag citrate for chronic constipation?

Posted by misssuezq @misssuezq, Sep 13 5:15am

I have a redundant colon with chronic constipation. As many of you experience just when you figure out a way to help your constipation, it stops working. I’m looking for a new way and want to try magnesium but wasn’t sure if others on here recommend magnesium or magnesium citrate. I welcome your comments.

Shelley,

I did not know about keeping the magnesium from 2 hours before or after meditation I’m glad you mentioned that.
Wow, there are many magnesium options they are trying to confuse me 😵‍💫😵‍💫🤣
Thank you for your input I really appreciate it.

misssuezq,
I also have finally found that Metamucil gummies work SOOOO much better for me. I had not realized how bad the powder was bloating me up. Until I finally realized it after a sudden vomiting episode, 6 big 🤮🤮, it felt like I puked up a gallon of fluid. I can drink the miralax and eat the gummy's slowly, I think this works better for me. I’m glad the Miralax worked for you. It caused cramping for me 😆. But I have POTS and visceral sensitivity so that could be why.

I take the magnesium citrate supplement, so in a capsule or tablet form, which is much less concentrated and intended to be used as a dietary supplement. But you’re right, the liquid form is a very strong laxative and not meant to be used regularly.

I’ve taken magnesium glycinate for sleep. I didn’t notice too much of a difference. My dietician told me it doesn’t have as much of a laxative effect because of the way it’s formulated whereas magnesium citrate draws more water into the colon, so that’s why it can help with constipation.

emo, I understand the cramps and bloating. For a long time I was using the Metamucil powder with the miralax. Recently my hubby purchased Metamucil gummies. WOW, they are much better for me. I take 5 at evening with my miralax, I take about an hour to get it all done. This has helped a lot. The bloating and cramping was getting worse, 🤮🤮 6x , felt like a gallon of fluid came out. I nearly fell asleep at the toilet. ShelleyW

Shelley,
Thank you for mentioning this as I also do Miralax and Metamucil and don’t like the feeling I get after taking it.

heyjoe415, I have found that adding 5 Metamucil gummies with the Miralax actually makes a difference, a bit more often, not perfect by any measure, but it helps. I still take the Trulance (Linzess), but I don't think it's really very effective, but when our 💩💩is as bad as it is for all of us, you take anything. For me, the gummies (5 evening's) are definitely better than the powder. The powder bloats me up SOOOO bad, I can't even breathe deeply or walk without feeling like I need to support my stomach with my hands. ShelleyW

Thank you for the kind suggestion Shelley. I'll try that! And yeah, I've avoided Metamucil because of the bloating. Miralax is enough to take with water.

I have tried Linzess with no change. I take Motegrity now which is supposed to help with motility. I don't get things moving until I take some Dulcolax. I don't like to have to do that. It is a little more gentle than mag citrate, but not much. With CIC, it's kind or all or nothing.

Thanks again Shelley! Joe

Thanks! I’m glad you find a combo that worked for you. Took a look at the Metamucil gummies and not sure it would work for me because I see the fiber source is inulin/chicory root fiber, which I have a lot of problems with. It’s very high FODMAP (a fermentable carbohydrate so it causes gas) and maybe that’s why? I didn’t realize Metamucil had sooo many products!

Magnesium citrate powder works for me and pretty quickly. 1/2 teaspoon in water will do it in a short time. If not, take more.

heyjoe415,
I have the Motegrity too. I have only used it 2x, month apart, the headaches stopped me dead. I have chronic complex migraines that respond to only home injections and Valium.
Do you get the headaches? If yes, how do you treat them? What time of day, food/no food, anything else you can recommend for me to tamp down the headaches, so I could use the Motegrity. Thanx, ShelleyW

Hi Shelley,

Sorry I can't really help you as I don't get headaches from Motegrity. I take them in the morning without food, if that helps.

I really don't think these high-priced drugs do much for CIC. I have to use the stimulant Dulcolax, and I don't recommend that. I don't know what else to do because, for me, the alternative isn't acceptable.
