Lymphedema of the neck

I have had this as well following tongue cancer surgery, chemo and radiation. I use a lymphedema pump made by Tactile Medical in Minnesota. Depending on the severity, I had lymphedema of the neck post radiation, not face. I ignored it for too long which was my fault then recently started doing the prescribed massages every night and wear a compression garment to bed and I have now seen tremendous improvement.

I also had and still have a very dry mouth and had terrible phlegm that I thought would never go away but it finally did. BTW I'm 6 months post treatment. All these side effects from the nasty radiation take time.

It really works great for me. I did a search on this forum and I know others use it, too. I still do daily self massage as well. I also wear a compression band at night. Right after my surgery I wore the band pretty much all the time.

Hello @lilypilly. It can be a little awkward. They do make handheld small ones that you can easily move around. The larger machine I recommended does work well for me. My neck gets hard as a rock, making it difficult to breathe and eat. It helps to move your head around until it feels comfortable, then move around so the machine gets to both sides of the neck. You can also pick the machine up and hold it, so it is easily massaging the front of the neck. They probably make newer types that are more lightweight. Mine is vintage! In addition, make sure the massaging heads are going downward, so the lymph fluid is being gently pushed downward. My machine has a switch, so the machine can massage upward, or downward. As the moderator so aptly says: "Radiation, the gift that keeps on giving!" Hey, we are alive, thank God!
