Lung pluera thickening after deviated septum surgery

Hello. I’m new to this group and hoping to get input from others who have similar experiences. I started with nasal issues Nov. 2024. I had surgery for a deviated septum and the doctor said when he started doing the surgery he found a lot of polyps. The surgery was supposed to be 1 hour and lasted 3 hours. At my follow up I was still very congested and had started a cough. The doctor said some people develop eosinophilic asthma after the surgery and he felt I had that. He did no test but prescribed an inhaler. It didn’t work. I went to my general doctor and she treated me for asthma with no relief. She referred me to a pulmonologist. I had a chest xray which showed pluera effusion and a partial lung collapse. A few months later I had a chest ct scan and was told I had pluera thickening and again the partial lung collapse. So far doctors keep treating me with asthma meds and some allergy meds. I was tested for allergies and had none. My bloodwork has been normal. The doctor is saying the thickening can be caused by pneumonia but I wasn’t diagnosed with pneumonia or anything at this point. The chest tightness and coughing have definitely increased. I cough so hard sometimes I actually end up vomiting. I wake up several times a night coughing. I can’t exert myself at all with out the chest tightness and feeling as though I can’t breathe.
I also was exposed to asbestos for 5 years with a previous employer. Im not sure if that plays in this or not. I’m very concerned but I don’t know what I should be asking my doctor to look at. Are there test I should have done?

I’m sorry for your troubles, it’s always frustrating when you have problems and finding answers for them especially the right ones. I’m thinking you should see a lung specialist and get a ct scan done for clear imaging because X-rays are more limited for details. To get the best possible diagnosis means going to the right doctor so you don’t get lost in a bunch of tests that aren’t giving you any relief from your symptoms. I think once you’ve done this you will get the right diagnosis and treatment, best wishes for you.

I was having difficulty getting a diagnosis related to septal thickening. My Mayo pulmonologist ordered a CT angiography which focused on the small vessels in my lungs. This finally led to a clear diagnosis.

Thank you. I’m glad you finally got a clear diagnosis. I will mention this to my pulmonologist.
