Lung nodule 9 cm marked as suspicious on report

Posted by sullivan728 @sullivan728, Jun 10 8:09am

Just had a pet ct scan skull to upper thigh
Results are not clear
Test results stated suspicious follow up ct scan recommended
Does this indicate cancer?

hi @sullivan728 - welcome to Mayo Connect. the short answer is maybe. there can also be benign lung nodules and PET scans aren't great at reading smaller nodules. it sounds like further testing is warranted. do you have a pulmonologist that can order the recommended CT scan?

Hello @sullivan728, there often isn't one clear answer in these situations. It usually takes a few scans and maybe a biopsy to get a clear answer. It's a good sign that the PET scan results are not clear. If the uptake numbers were high, then it would likely be cancer. Even then, without a biopsy there is no definitive answer. I'm a stage IV lung cancer patient, with a 1 cm fungal nodule. Our lungs react (and sometimes overreact) to all sorts of foreign bodies.
What prompted the PET scan, prior to a CT?
Can you clarify, is this mass 9cm (as the message subject indicates) or 9mm?

Morning, now have been diagnosed with stage 1a.b lung cancer, been advised to have lower lobe of left lung removed, read that it is the gold standard treatment for my size nodule. Haven’t seen surgeon yet.

@sullivan728 , thanks for providing this update. I'm sorry that you didn't receive better news but try to focus on the early stage. Having found this now, at this early stage can be great news in that you are now empowered to take action toward a cure. Has your appointment with the surgeon been scheduled?
