Lumpectomy without radiation vs Mastectomy

Posted by cgraft @cgraft, Jan 23, 2023

I have grade 1, Well Differentiated Invasive Ductal Breast Cancer. It is 9 mm. Because I can not have radiation after the Lumpectomy (I had radiation in 1999 for Hodgkins Disease) my Drs. want me to do a Mastectomy. I am 68 years old and have decided to do the Lumpectomy followed by Tamoxifen. Is there anyone else in this group that has been in my situation?

Thank you. I did have a consult some months ago with NET specialist at UNM. It just yielded advice--treat as ordinary breast cancer.

Female; 67 yrs. Long term patient of advanced rheumatoid arthritis (on immunosuppressants) also has interstitial lung disease (lung infection). Diagnosed with stage1 gradeIII breast cancer. Is radiation therapy safe for her or should we opt for mastectomy. Thank You!

Welcome @ipant , this seems like a discussion for the oncology radiologist. I understand you aren’t the patient, but a friend or family member? We are not medical professionals here, we are patients. We can hopefully add support and understanding from a patient point of view.
This sounds like a complex case to make treatment decisions.
I would love to help you find some support, can you tell me more to help me understand better?
