Lumpectomy??

Posted by lkat95 @lkat95, 4 days ago

I was diagnosed with stage one invasive carcinoma with mixed ductal and lobular features in November. Since that diagnosis, an additional area in the same breast was diagnosed with atypical ductal hyperplasia. When I am talking to doctors, a lumpectomy seems reasonable and I leave feeling confident with my decision, BUT I spend the next nights, days and weeks agonizing over that decision. I can’t find much from people who have had a lumpectomy on this forum. Most seem to go with a mastectomy. Is there anyone willing to share about their lumpectomy experience?

I had RB lumpectomy, followed by 15 radiation treatments and anastrozole in fall 2024. Lobular, 22 mm, highly ER+, Herc-, BRCA negative, low Oncotype score. July 2025 mammo led to LB lumpectomy for 8 mm tumor, 15 radiation treatments, and now exemestane for 5 years. Very good prognosis for both, but cancer is sneaky.

Lumpectomy is the easiest surgery I've had in my life, and I've had a few! I took ibuprofen and tylenol for post surgery pain, and was back to work in two days. Neither surgeon (I changed hospitals) recommended mastectomy. So much depends on the biology of the tumor, your age, your preferences. For my type lumpectomy, radiation and AI has same outcomes as mastectomy, and I like my breasts!
