Lower back pain in combo with hip issues

Posted by marjul @marjul, 1 day ago

I have struggled with sciatic nerve issues, L5 S1 area I have herniated disc. Over the past year I have recvd some steroid injections which have helped with the pain. Recently I was getting into bed, I kneed down to lift my body up and had this overwhelming excruciating pain in my hips area/ lower back it took my breathe away, I lunged forward facedown and after a few seconds the pain went away. I was able to go about what I was doing no issues.

This past week I was standing and going to sit in the drivers seat of my car and it happened again as I squatted down to sit between the steering wheel and the seat. It happened again same issue later in the day. It has now happened a few times more and it has really caught me off guard. Could this be something new ? Or could it all be related to the current issues I have going on?

Have you seen or called your doctor? It may be an exacerbation or an entirely new condition, needs to be evaluated

It sounds like one of my back spasms. I get them when I exert myself physically.

It may be good to get bilateral hip/pelvis MRI to see if you have any soft tissue injury or inflammation. I have spine issues that have caused bilateral gluteal tendinopathy and hamstring tears due to weakness/lack of control of hip and leg movements.

@dlydailyhope I have an L4/5 degeneration with bone spur that needs a spinal fusion . For last four years I was told my terrible nerve pain was SI joint ligament laxity . I have now developed gluteal trochanter and hip pain . Do you think this is related to the spine problem as I am very confused .

From what I have read and experienced, lumbar sacrum plexus issues due to spinal canal and nerve root compression can cause pain/weakness/numbness from low back, buttocks, hips, down legs and to feet.

You could have hypermobility in joints like I do which adds to the problem because joints move more than normal. Did you have bilateral MRI of both hips/pelvis along with lumbar spine? What did the radiologist report list as impressions? You could definitely have a combination of lumbar and sacrum/pelvis issues contributing to your symptoms. Have you ever been diagnosed with hypermobility, autoimmune issues or connective tissue disease by a rheumatologist? Did you have EMG/nerve conduction study on lower limbs and do physical therapy over the years? Did it help any? Where did they do your cortisone injections and did they help any? Sometimes, joints can deteriorate with too many cortisone shots and not recommended for a long period.

My L4 was slipping over my L5 so they needed to fuse to provide some stability. In hindsight, I should have had surgery sooner in both cervical and lumbar spine to prevent worsening arthritis/degeneration and permanent nerve damage. I kept being told to delay, delay, delay since I was in my late 40s/early 50s but think I could have prevented some of the damage if done sooner.

@dlydailyhope thank you for response. Yes I do have a mild hypermobility issue with slight hip displacement. Mild arthritis in right hip and labral tears bilaterally. I have done lots of research and have vast knowledge of my body. I had. A radioisotope ct spect scan showing the degenerative issue with sclerosis of the bone on L4/5 but SI joints showed not much wear . My ligaments probably add to my nerve pain which my life. I could write forever but in short , I have always exercised and loved it. Miss it all now. Just walks. I am 75 , slim and have osteoporosis!! Won’t take the drugs but do fortibone etc etc. I have found a top surgeon in London and am waiting for his decision as to whether to operate . I am happy to go sheds either way spinal fusion but worry that my ongoing nerve pain will still be there from my unstable pelvis issue. My life has been non existent for three years . What do you think ?
