Lower back pain
Hello, I’m a 29 yr old female. Got tripped up at work and lower back has been giving me pain. It hurts and goes numb when I sit up straight for more then 10mins. Laying straight back also hurts. Pressure is relieved when I tilt forward. It stays numb for about 20min afterwards. I have two points on my back that feel bruised to touch one is center of lower back the other is a little higher and off to the side. Work sent me to Dr they did an X-ray and said spine looks great. But I’m still experiencing pain and tingling when sitting straight and it’s constant on not being able to get comfortable. The pain is like an ache that won’t go away. I’m able to bend with little pain. And standing feels better then sitting. What else could it be?

Edit this has been going on for a little over a week. And went to Dr yesterday.
Hello Sammie- empathies for the low back pain, esp at a younger age. You mentioned laying straight on your back is uncomfortable; put a pillow(s) under your knees, raising them up enough to alleviate the low back pressure. Good that you saw a doctor yesterday, hopefully you gained some insight on what the problem is & next steps on treatment. Best wishes
Are you using cold packs alternating with heating pad? If not 20 minutes every 2 hours as you are able. If you don’t have any medical problems, kidney/liver disease, stomach ulcers can take ibuprofen alternating with Tylenol as per dose on bottle. Discuss physical therapy with your doctor. I haven’t looked but suspect there are videos on you tube to help with acute (short term) low back pain. Try searching McKenzie method). It’s easy to let your back muscles get tight when you have pain, so gentle stretches are good, stop when they cause pain. Use correct lifting technique.
Where is that numbness exactly?
Is there bruising?
What did your doctor find when he/she examined you?
Have you ever had cancer?
Any recent spine surgery?
Do you take any medicine that suppresses your immune system?
Urinary incontinence, sciatica (pain the radiates down one leg or both), numbness between your legs (saddle anesthesia), unexplained weight loss, fever, weakness in the legs, or night sweats are red flags that require more urgent attention.
Hopefully this will resolve itself in a matter of weeks. Good luck to you. Hope this helps
sammietudor95, it sounds like a damaged disc. You won't know without a lumbar MRI.
Sadly, work likes to send us for an x-ray, so that the corporation never becomes responsible for medical costs of an on the job injury.
If it is a bulging disc, it could be pressing against the spinal cord. Bending forward creates more space behind the bulge and relieves the pressure.
Mine is a layman's guess, but you might want to request an MRI. The numbness after bending forward may indicate that the pressure could cause nerve damage. Sometimes bulging discs herniate initially or with repeated pressure, which causes me to suggest that you not wait. But sometimes bulging discs heal sufficiently on their own.
The insurance companies usually recommend PT as an initial conservative treatment. PT is often quite helpful, but best not until you have an MRI and know what is going on in your spine.

It would be good to see an orthopedic spine specialist for evaluation and MRI of lumbar spine. It sounds like you have spinal nerve compression when you are in certain positions.
Thank you for your reply the numbness goes across my lower back down into my right leg and into my foot. There is no bruising just tender to touch. The doctor found nothing wrong in the xray had me bend certain ways and sent me on my way with note saying I can go back with no restrictions. I’ve never had cancer, and no spinal surgery. I don’t take any medication.
Thank you for your reply. I’ve been talking to other people here at work who’ve gotten hurt. And they have permanent damage from the workers comp Drs saying nothing is wrong when there was. I am going to schedule an appointment with my own Dr today.
Thank you for your reply, I’ve been doing some research and it could be numerous things even without the spinal injury. So I’m going to my dr and gonna get evaluated and see what he says.
Thank you for your reply. I will do that!
I totally agree. I had lower back pain that I thought was the result of a hysterectomy. I had a CTscan, X-rays, and an MRI and it's stunning how different each one was. The X-ray did not show two very important conditions -- Tarlov Cysts and spinal stenosis -- that the other two tests revealed. It's critical to get them done, especially the MRI. I was sent to PT, and to a spine specialist, and I think I'm on a road to improvement.
