Long Term Effects of SSRI's

Posted by fotula @fotula, 1 day ago

I recently read a study that said SSRI's have been linked to dementia in older age. Is there definitely a link?

@fotula I found your question to be very thought provoking, as I have been on an SSRI called citalopram for many years. While it is a low dose of 10mg daily, this made me think!

As I looked up possible clues to back your words, I see that several reports speak to higher doses of SSRIs. That said, it is my opinion only [not a medical professional here!] that dementia has several prongs to it, as far as what might cause it. Family history is a big factor, as is a person's own personal health history.

Are you currently taking an SSRI? What are your thoughts?

I take 5 mg of Lexapro (escitalopram) only. I am always leary of taking anything that might promote dementia! Of course, one study says it does affect dementia risk and another says the opposite.
