Liver disease itching: What helps?

Posted by jeanne5009 @jeanne5009, Nov 26, 2018

Does anyone have info or treatments for itching? My scalp and lower back have a very itchy rash. Tried ointment shampoo, antihistamine and steroids...wont go away. I am Stage 4 liver cirrhosis. Dermatologist and PVP are stumped.

@skolotilin, I hope that you find some relief from the itching. Have you asked your doctors why you have this itching?
Congratulations on a stable and improved liver. What is being done to monitor your liver?

I've just noticed this post so forgive me if this solution has already been suggested.Prior to my transplant my itching was so bad that i drew blood on the front of my legs; I still have the scars. I tried everything my doctor suggested but nothing worked. i saw E45 anti -itch cream and decided to give it a try. It worked beautifully and I had relief at last. My doctor gaveme huge bottles of the stuff and I used it every day until my transplant and for a while afterwards. I still always have a tube in my drawer for emergencies. i know it doesn't work for everyone but it worked for me so it's worth a try for anyone suffering the horrors of itching.

Thank you so much for your caring reply. I pray I never get as bad as you describe. The funny thing is that since my diagnosis two years ago, my liver has been stable, even improved. I thought I was going crazy when the itching began! Thanks again and be well.

Yes, I still use it. When I’ve stopped taking it the itching gets worse, so I continue to take it. I wonder if I’ll ever be able to stop itching. Plus, at night, My itch is extreme and all over. Legs, feet, arms, everywhere!

@skolotilin I'm so sorry you're going through this 😔 I remember this too well. I went through this for 2 years before my transplant. I thought it would never end. Every night...no sleep, scratching until I bled. Everywhere on my body including my eyebrows, scalp, eyelids, fingers, palms, soles of my feet, toes, scalp and every other inch. I tried everything. The meds the doctors gave me never helped nor did baths, creams, antihistimines, special sheets. It did finally end after my transplant but now 1 1/2 years later its started up again but modertately. It will get better you just have to hang in there. Easy to say I know, but it doesn't last forever. I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I can empathize and share in what you're going through.

My doctor prescribed Cholestyramine 2X/day for extreme back and abdomenal itching. At night when my feet and legs itch, I take hydroOXYmine PAM. Together they have helped a lot. I went to dermatologist too, but she the prescribed creams that did nothing. For reference, I was diagnosed with Cirrhosis 2 years ago and have no further symptoms since then. If you get the cholestyramine, I suggest you take it with OJ (it's a powder). Good luck!

Hi, @skolotilin. When I had to take Cholestyramine with my itching with liver failure I think that I put it in orange juice, too.
Do you still take it? or need the lotions?
