Liquid alendronate

Posted by anewyorker @anewyorker, Dec 5, 2025

Hi everyone,

I know I posted about my dilemma as I prepare to go off Tymlos after two successful years on it. My endocrinologist wants me to go back on Prolia, which I took for two years a few years ago. I can’t take fosamax because it does terrible things to my digestive tract, and I’m leery of reclast.

I was resigned to Prolia, but now I have a new question. I have read about a liquid form of fosamax, or alendronate, and I’m wondering whether anyone has any knowledge of or experience with this. Does it cause the same gastro problems? Any other thoughts ?

Thanks for your help.

The liquid formulation MAY reduce GI risks like esophageal irritation compared to tablets, due to faster transit and solubility, making it suitable for those with swallowing issues or motility problems. Also, you only have to remain upright for 30 minutes (instead of a hour). That said, I have no personal experience with it.

So it may be worth a try. You can always discontinue if you have problems

I use it and like it. Has a list price of over $1k per three month supply. Based on what I’ve been told, it is not covered by Medicare so I’ll need to find an alternative when I go on the Medicare advantage plan

@yfarah57 different advantage plans have different formularies. There may be a plan that accepts liquid alendronate on its formulary. You can research this starting in the Medicare.gov website

I’d also check good rx. I take daily erythromycin. It’s an old antibiotic that has been around since at least the 1960s. For some reason the retail price is $1000/ months. With my insurance it’s over $50/month. And with good rx $35/ month. Drug pricing in the US makes no sense.

There is also an effervescent tablet called Effervescent Tablet called Binosto that you could investigate

Thanks for the suggestion. Didn’t realize I had so many options, but one of the online companies, CostPlus drug company, gave me a quote of $40+ per dose instead of the $90+ list price. That is less than half the cost. Crazy how the price differs so much. Thanks again
