Lifestraw pitcher problem

I am unable to remove the plastic filter housing from the glass container of my 7-cup Lifestraw pitcher. It was difficult to insert the housing when I first set it up the first time . The fit is very snug. I pull and twist and jiggle with no luck. Is this common or is my pitcher defective? Is there a technique to removing the plastic insert? It needs cleaning. Thank you.
