Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group
Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.'
And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect?
Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
- Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/get-walking-with-this-12-week-walking-schedule/
So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.
Who’s in? Who’s going to join me?
Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

Good for you @gingerw. Walking is good for your mental well-being. With everything coming at you right now....you have chosen a helpful activity. Now....after tonight's snow dump, we may start to see some melting and then temperatures in the 40's to keep the ice away during the spring snowmelt. I need to get outside also.
Be safe and protected.
Chris
Just a little "whine" here - I have been chained to my computer for the better part of a month - didn't mind at first as the weather was awful, but lately... Almost done so I promised my self a walk first thing this morning before I settled in to finish. So I get up to 8F, howling wind, and just enough new snow to make the ice underneath slick as snot. I guess I'll watch to see if it warms up.
Sue
Sue, yes so much to consider with winter, good you are being cautious. Hope at least the sun is shining there as it is here in S MN.
@sueinmn
Enjoy your walk with the penguins.
Watch out for the hungry polar bears.
Jake
😆 🤣 😂
@sueinmn, Not fair, not fair!
Hadn't heard that phrase describing ice before. Love it! I hope you get out for that walk soon. Being a slave to your computer is so hard when the birds start chirping and the sun is shining.
Hello @barblacanne. I have updated your profile settings so you will no longer receive any email notifications from Connect. If you'd like to change your notifications settings back at any time, or for any group, please let us know and we can help guide you how to do that in your profile. Have a great day!
Ginger....What did you slightly mention you just found out???? Hello, Ginger and Jude and everyone. I've shared the joy of a compression fracture in my thoracic area, T12. No fun, Ginger. I don't think I could have walked a half mile 'for fun'. You're amazing, hats off to you for your determination. I had ortho cement in a procedure that was outpatient, done by a leading radiologist since the back doc wasn't available and I didn't really like him anyway. So, I left with only a band-aid free of pain and to this day, 12 years later, have had only an occasional pain that reminds me I shouldn't be doing whatever I'm doing.....lifting more than a gallon of water, or whatever. I'm so thankful. I had severe pain for several months before finally getting the procedure, new at the time and avoided invasive surgery. Hope you qualify for the same. Hope the MRI's are productive. And you get relief asap! Also, do you think you maybe/oughta/should be careful and forego the walking for fun until this back issue is addressed????? Maybe?
I would, however, follow the eagle as far as my broken back would take me! What a joy that must be to have bald eagles as neighbors. I have hawks, owls, herons, egrets, and others, and often have them in local nearby woods/trees, but bald eagles I only enjoy in digital and such.
I've been working to get my son treatment and more care from Mayo. They are so wonderful. He got his botox shots last Thursday, begins seeing different departments this week, hopefully soon the botox will begin working and he'll have pain relief desperately needed. It is happening, he is getting help. Again, thanks to all of you for your support and thoughts during this crisis. We're making it through.
It's in the 80's today, 60's tonight and tomorrow....60-70's here the rest of the week, No reason for me not to go for walk, but will be at Mayo for tests again tomorrow. Plan to walk the corridors there, if I feel ok after the procedures. I must get all this done and get my son better so I can begin walking and back to the therapy pool.
I'm so impressed with all you folks on this site who actually walk in such cold, freezing, icy, windy weather. I'm totally impressed! I don't know how you do it. I can't handle the cold or the very hot, so I'm always looking for new ways to get my walks.....corridors, malls, etc.
Thanks for this site. You are all an inspiration to many.
Blessings, enjoy this world!

So descriptive, Sue!. Love it. Hope you stay smart and wait until it's safe for walking, snotty ice and all! You sound so dedicated to your computer projects. Good for you, but it can make you into a 'snotty' person if not careful. catch you later, my friend. Catching up a bit...blessings, elizabeth
@ess77 I sincerely hope both you and your son will improve in health with each passing day. Good luck from snowy Canada! (We have lots of eagles where I live, too. Their majesty is awesome.) Warm wishes, Laurie
