Let’s Go Walking! Join me for a virtual walking support group

Posted by Becky, Volunteer Mentor @becsbuddy, Feb 19 11:59am

Many of you living with cancer or an autoimmune disease, like me, deal with daily fatigue. You know that exercise is so important to your health, but it’s so hard. There’s always an excuse: it’s too cold or hot, it’s going to rain or it’s raining, or it’s snowy and icy, or I just don’t want to. I, too, have all these excuses, but I have a new rescue dog who wants to go out and who doesn’t care about my excuses! And I’ve got traction devices for my boots.

Now I just need a walking group who will keep me accountable. People who say, ‘let’s go for a walk.’

And I thought: What about my virtual friends on MayoClinicConnect? And Mayo Clinic has an easy 12-week walking program to get us started! Here’s the link:
Get walking with this 12-week walking schedule

So let’s form a virtual walking group. We can agree to walk every day and encourage each other through Connect. We can walk outdoors, in a mall, or in the red center, or in the hallways of our apartment building.

Who’s in? Who’s going to join me? Come on, Let’s Go Walking!

@becsbuddy

Hi, all
Tomorrow starts week #2! 5 min warm up, 7 min exercise, and 5 min cool down. Thought for the week: “ All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking.” Friedrich Nietzsche

@contentandwell You know, I’ll bet you could make some wipes! Put a bunch of folder paper towels or wash cloths in a plastic tub and pour in a small amount of kitchen/bathroom cleaner . Just to make things damp. Worth a try! Just scrub your hands real well after using

@becsbuddy That's a good idea, but I think you would need to add something else to it to make it disinfecting.
This is really getting worrisome. We were supposed to have a late lunch tomorrow with my sister and her husband and my brother and his wife but he has canceled, he's concerned about dining out. The restaurant we meet at is in a hotel that is primarily a business person's hotel so it's always very empty on Sunday afternoon — we at times have been the only diners — but he is still concerned. He does not have a compromised immune system as I do, but his health is not good due to his heart.

This virus thing is really getting everyone worried. My friend who goes to the gym everyday said it is not as crowded as before. Another friend belongs to a movie club and a book club and she is concerned about going to the movies. She said her friend was on a cruise to Mexico and she was unable to contact her…. My daughter and my son in law who owns houses in other state and in England are not traveling like they used to. They are not going to restaurants either and urge me not to go out too much. I'm still doing my am and pm walk, otherwise I think I will be stir crazy.

The achilles tendons in both my feet take turns giving me much pain. Is it a good idea to do much walking when this is happening? (Have rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis.)

Hello
This is Jennifer, aka Pollyanne. I was posting on here a few months ago about my sore and itchy scalp and losing my hair and baldness in a large area. I need to catch up as I haven't posted for a while as I have been travelling. First of all, happily my hair has mostly come back and for anyone with similar problems I have been taking Hydroxychloroquine or also called Plaquenil, twice a day. This seems to have helped and my hair has grown back in the bald area and thickened up in most of the other areas. (one area is still skimpy) I then started itching all over and allergy pills didn't help. My dermatologist put me on Pregabalin or Lyrica which makes me tired and dizzy in the morning but seems to have helped with the itching. They cannot totally identify what is wrong with me but they are sure it is auto immune. My immune system has been suspect for many years as I also have chronic fatigue and some unexplained pain.
I am also writing in answer to Merry, as I have had a lot of problems with my feet and achilles tendons for years. Physio therapy hasn't helped much but recently I had my feet and ankles adjusted by an excellent chiropractor who has helped me a lot. I also have Plantar Fasciitus. ( not sure of the spelling) I would suggest trying this and also good walking shoes with orthotics. Some health insurances cover orthotics or if not maybe some orthotics from the drug store might work. I have always carried on walking.
That is the 3rd reason I am writing, because I am an avid walker and try to walk most mornings. I also have a stretching routine that I follow up with after walking. Right now I need to get back to my walking as I have been travelling, partly on a cruise ship that is known for it's excellent food and now I need to lose 5 pounds. I know that isn't much compared to a lot of people but it is a lot for me. Right now I am tired and jet lagged. I haven't taken my Lyrica for a few days as I couldn't cope with the extra fatigue while flying etc. I would be happy to help with a walking regimen if there is something I can do. I live in Maui and so my hours are behind most Americans, but I don't have ice and snow to stop me.
Please let me know how I can help and thank you Becky for helping me previously when I was so worried. I know you have your worries too. Auto immune diseases really suck.
Good luck with the walking.
Jennifer

@mayofeb2020 If you can't get out 2 walk, walk around your house or walk around at commercial breaks during TV watching! Step in place if that's all the space you have. If you have an indoor mall nearby or large box store, take and go there for your walking but leave your wallet / credit cards away from any temptation LOL.

Good morning exercise friends- How are you all doing? Have you piccked up your pace at all? When I use to walk I would get into a trance-like state, inhaling the fresh air that came at me. I would feel energized, powerful and part of nature. With the sun shinning down on my face I felt invincible. No matter what your speed is, if you are walking the air will hit your face. Feel it! Let you mind wander and see where it takes you. I solved a lot of the world's problems sometimes! lol.

Exercise has been the “best medicine” for me. Even right after heart attack when I could do very little without being exhausted, the little I could do gave me a sense of accomplishment.

@merpreb It has been very foggy yesterday and today, until mid-morning. I jumped up and was ready to head out this morning, then decided to wait for a bit. After my cougar experience last year, on an early morning walk, it is prudent to have better visibility. I love to get my walk done in the morning, then i won't make excuses later ;))
