Less common cholesterol lowering drugs

My experience with statins and other cholesterol lowering drugs was problematic. My cardiologist looked at my hypercholesterol analysis and explained that of the five types my type was the rare one that didn't tolerate statins and many other cholesterol lowering drugs. Total cholesterol was 380 with LDL at 190 --- very very high. He ordered a PCKS9 drug which you inject every two weeks. Total cholesterol is now 120 with LDL 20. I'm very pleased... just my experience. Cost is $40 with insurance. I have a friend who has had similar results but uses statins and high doses of niacin. His hypercholesterol type was different. My blood analyses were conducted by Vanderbilt. Just my experience. Good luck with your choices. I hope you are seeing a cardiologist.

I've been using Repatha several years now to lower my cholesterol. Lipitor left me with neuropathy/neuralgia. I took Lipitor for 1 month and the side effects continued getting worse to the point of near death before I found a doctor that understood what was happening.

I am Statin intolerant. Have been on Repatha which I inject every 2 weeks. It has to be taken with a statin. I tolerate low dose Pravastatin 10 mg. Had to start out with one tablet twice a week and build up to taking one tablet every day. Repatha and statin will lower your cholesterol. I can’t speak to the cholesterol -Neurotic pain or numbness. Been on Repatha since my second heart attack in 2018. It works. It’s very expensive but there are programs out there that you might qualify for free meds. Good luck.

Also try Cholestoff . It is an over-the-counter vitamin that you can take it help lower mine significantly and I’m only taking two in the morning, but I’m gonna start taking 4 a day because I need to get off of atorvastatin Because now I have neuropathy and my legs are extremely weak, and I will not live like this

@bajxrbb I also came off a statin recently because my legs were weak enough due to neuropathy and I thought the statin was making it worse. My cardiologist gave me the green light and said get off it for four months and see how you feel. You will not die during this period just watch your diet and take a low dose aspirin. After 4 months we will revisit replacing Lipitor for something else

I use Cholestryamine for the off label treatment of my chronic irritable bowel syndrome. It is a cholesterol lowering drug, inexpensive, and my cholesterol levels are terrific. Not sure why it isn't prescribed much
