Length of time with pmr and multiple autoimmune disorders
How long has your pmr been active? I was diagnosed in August 2024. Been on taper schedule with steroids from 15 - now 7.5 with several flares and ups and downs between 7-9. Had COVID over 6 weeks ago.
I also have pernicious anemia, atropic gastritis and hypothyroidism and osteoporosis.
I’m wondering if those with pmr over a year have multiple autoimmune disorders? If so- is anyone see relationships among multiple autoimmune disorders and length of time with pmr?

I wonder if the PMR has anything to do with it. On the other hand the medications like prednisone can cause various conditions. It does seem by following this site that many different auto immunes surface. Probably just the weakened state of our immune system suddenly goes haywire. Then all the medications start to cause more of them.
Good question but I don't think there is much research that can answer the question.
Accounting for other autoimmiune disorders along with PMR might enable identification of cases of PMR which may be more difficult to treat. I have been diagnosed with multiple autoimmune disorders in addition to PMR and it took 12 years for me to get off prednisone. My rheumatologist stopped referring to PMR and said I had a problem with "systemic inflammation."
I personally think that "pure PMR" doesn't even exist. At the age we are diagnosed with PMR , there is a good chance that other conditions already exist. The various combinations of many different things probably explains why each case of PMR is different.
Good thoughts - I have had pernicious anemia, atropic gastritis and hypothyroidism for over 20 years. I also have peripheral neuropathy for even longer. I was so sure I would have pmr for just a short time- maybe a year at most- that I’m a bit discouraged that I’m only at 7.5 mg of steroids and still having pain. Also steroids caused high A1c and pre diabetes- so now on Metformin. A merry go round of emotions🤪
Trying to be patient and kind to my body. My PCP is terrific- who diagnosed me very quickly. He is a calm and reassuring voice with my questions but says it can be a long haul! This site helps.
