Has anyone had late recurrence kidney cancer?

Has anyone had late recurrence kidney cancer? I am 56 and was diagnosed 10 years ago with RCC stage 1b grade 2, my kidney was removed. All the doctors I talked with said it wouldn’t come back. I recently went to a Urologist who said the same thing but ordered a CT scan and it came back with 3 tumors, The three tumors are 2cm, 1.8cm and 1cm. Had biopsy done and confirmed RCC. Stage 2. They also found a mass in my pancreatic tail that is 3cm. With only one kidney just worried about protecting the function. I have an appointment with a radiologist about ablation. Has anyone had experience with a solitary kidney developing kidney cancer?

Im sorry you're experiencing a recurrence! Kidney Cancer can take decades to re-raise its ugly head unfortunately. Im now a lifetime patient at Mayo, twice yearly visits for checks, due to being categorized as an Intermediate Risk after they successfully got the 2 malignancies 2 yrs ago.
I will be watching how your appts go, if you are willing to keep us updated. I know, its a scary thing, but keep on it!💜

I am sorry about this. 10 years is a long time! I cant offer any experience with this. I would say any time masses found that are small is good news. I know they will do everything to preserve your kidney function. I will be having radical nephrectomy July 6th for a 6cm RCC. Already CKD Stage 3a. I do not have metastasis on chest CT. Keytruda infusions may be done after pathology. Immunosuppressants were not around 10 yrs. ago. Research about them. Side effects , possible. It turns on your own immunity to,seek and find any hidden cancer cells in your body Renal cancer "hides" disguises itself , so your regular immunity isnt fighting it. There are different kinds, other than Keytruda . I am a 60 yr old F and not a medical person. Be positive as possible. I know this was a shock for you. Prayers have been answered more than once since this began. Ask for guidance, healing, and help with the anxiety. 🙏 for your best outcome!

@krhine23, that must've been a real shock to find out that the cancer had come back. After 10 years, I can imagine you thought you were out of the woods.

I hope you saw the helpful replies from @quirky9 and @gangcarotid1. I can understand your concern about protecting the function of the remaining kidney. @agadeb and @ebdent88 may also have experiences to add.

@krhine23, did they confirm that the mass on the pancreas is also kidney cancer? Have you had your appointment with the radiation oncologist? What are next steps for you?

Going to do a biopsy the pancreas mass to confirm either kidney cancer metastasis in the pancreas or possibly a net tumor. I just did a Pet scan a few days ago and there is two small areas of bone metastasis. Switching now to a drug treatment protocol, not sure which one yet and radiation for the bone areas. It’s a lot to take in but hopefully since the cancer seems to be a lower grade it may be more manageable.
