L sided facial numbness, progressing, still no diagnosis
Hello, I have a family member that developed left sided facial numbness 5 years ago. It has progressively gotten worse over the years. He has completed a full work up including 2nd opinion at Mayo with scans and NeuroSurg with no answer. Good news, they cannot see any concerns. No other symptoms. Just thought I would see if anyone else in similar situation, any thoughts on direction? Thanks!

Hello @kgrieman and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. It is so great of you to reach out on behalf of your family member to see if you can be of help!
I wonder if your family member has had any of the following: brain injuries, dental surgery, head or neck tumors, autoimmune diseases such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, transient ischemic attacks, chemical burns, heat or fire burns, severe allergic reactions, cold exposure, severe diabetic neuropathy, or severe anemia prior to the numbness setting in?
I have this also. The docs considered a neuroma. Had MRI and CT but cannot do contrast. I honestly don't care to do any more explorations. I have a lot of issues with sensations and have decided to just accept this one until it becomes clear I really need to find out the cause. In other words, if it stays the same I am okay, and if it gets worse the cause may become more apparent.
i AM DOING THE SAME IF IT GETS WORSE THEN I will think about some other solution NS REAL CAUSE Thank you for sharing hope we both feel better and it subsides Barb BAKER Northern MN Mayo is the best
Mine is much worse and loud noises have started to set off facial pain and numbness- as if I had an injection of novocaine. I am seeing an acoustic neuroma specialist and considering MRI's of neck, brain, ango brain but contrast is risky for kidneys so not sure what I will do.
