Knee Replacement 3 weeks in
Hi everyone,
So I recently had a knee replacement. On the day after surgery my ROM was at around 85. The physio was happy enough and and Docs to send me home. On the next day my knee blew up. Swollen as anything.
I literally had very little ROM for the first 12 days after surgery.
I just had my first Physio appointment and I’m sitting at 65. She was reasonably happy but I’m still getting swelling which seems to prevent me from bending more.
I think atm with exercises I’m at the 80 mark but still having difficulty.
Everywhere I read the expectations are 90-100. This gets me worried.
I’m pushing hard but can only budge as far as the knee wants to go.
Any feedback or advice?

Glad you found my response helpful. It’s always good to hear others’ perspectives, but I’ve also been told, each knee for each patient is totally different. This is not a competition. And I went off pain meds earlier this week. Still hurts and very achy, but got doc to give me meloxicam for swelling, and I supplement with Tylenol. I wanted off the oxy.

1 ReactionYeah I’m
On my last prescription of Oxy now. Can’t say they’ve helped that much, especially at night. But I hate taking pills full stop.
And you are right every situation is different. I might take longer than others but I’ll get there. 🙏🏽
Thanks. It means a lot to get encouragement and validation on this interminable journey. Sounds like you're making quick progress.
You are quite welcome. I’m so impatient, but careful, slow, and steady is definitely the way to go with TKR. It’s a very big deal. The good news is, that to a person, I have only heard it was the best decision they ever made regarding their knees. We’ll see. Hopeful.
Wow, that's really helpful!
Hey everyone,
Well I just wanted to thank all of those who commented here. For all your wisdom and reassurance. I hope you are all doing well.
I’m now in my 7th week I believe.
Swelling has gone way down. Still a little stiff and sore, but no complaints.
I’ve gone from 65 ROM at the time I originally set up this post at 3 weeks, I’m now at 105 ROM which is fantastic. Still some improvement to go but I’m very happy and confident.
The knee has healed really well.
Strength has gone from 3/5 to 5/5.
Surgeon and Physio really pleased with progress.
I just wanted to share with you all.
Thanks again. Keep safe and healthy.

1 ReactionIt's a tough surgery. I'm 18 days in on my second. Barely holding on to 90 degrees! Shooting for 100 by the end of next week. Keep icing to keep the swelling down and walk as much as you can that also help dissipate the swelling. And of course keep bending it throughout the day. You will get there. You are still early but keep on it!

1 Reaction16 months out on my right knee, 18 days on my left. Hard to remember now while I'm in the middle of my second one, but hands down the best thing I ever did for my knee arthritis which I've had for over 20 years. I was back to hiking after my first, and now with the second I can't wait to have to brand new knees. It is an amazing surgery but one of the most painful things I have gone through. There is light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there! I am an RN and started back to work at 3 months. By six months it was incredible, and by a year, wow, felt like my own knee. Trust the process!
