Klonopin taper

Posted by dawgbone @dawgbone, Jul 31, 2017

I have been on some kind of benzo for almost 40 yrs. I am trying to taper from 1.5-2 mgs of klonopin daily . Began in mid may 2017 and my last cut was very small on 7-2-17 to get to 1mg. Honestly feels like i am dying. I also take trazodone 75 mgs and 4 drugs for high blood pressure. I have been researching gabapentin and seroquel to help with the withdrawal symptons. Please offer any suggestions or help. I am 69 yrs old and cant even leave my house to visit my kids and grands. Thank you for any help!

@scruffy1- Very interesting! I've never have come up to anything like that for all the many years I've been on clonazepam. Every few years my PCP asks me whats my thoughts on continueing and I tell him why change what works and that seems to be the end of that.
I'm due for my yearly checkup and I plan on bringing this up. I'll keep you posted on what I hear.
I agree with you about it's not just the doc's fault. It seems like every time our govt. trys to control problems they overstep and that hurts many who are not abusing the drugs they are on and suffer greatly because of the govt. pressure on doc's. Jim @thankful

@thankful DEA is under a lot of pressure to fix what the doctors and Big Pharma caused. Do you think this is new? It goes back to the early 1940s. Anyone reading this, Google "Direct Sales v. U.S." and see how look the Industry has been into profit from addiction. We studied this in an 80-hour class I took on federal conspiracy law. It will open your eyes because this is actually law decided by the U.S Supreme Court...and I'm not one who is into what, today, they call "a conspiracy."

Triazedine helps with sleep. I also take melatonin. The problem is that you have to taper triazedone as well. But I can come with the benzodiazepine withdrawal because I can sleep. However. You will have withdrawal from triazedone. There is some literature on a tapering schedule with the triazedone. I here about CBD oil and that it helps. However, will I have to taper it as well.

Hi, @ck1958, and welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. If I understand correctly what you've posted, you feel that the tapering process for clonazepam (Klonopin) is doable because you can sleep, and the melatonin and the trazadone are helping you get that sleep. Is that correct? Where are you currently in your tapering schedule for clonazepam (Klonopin)?

I am currently taking 1mg of klonopin each night for leg jerks. I want to wean off and supplement with magnesium and essential oils. Have read some of the suggestions for a slow taper. My question is about logistics. I can cut my 1mg tablet in half but the tablet is already so small, I’m not sure I can cut it into fourths or more. The suggested taper is 10% every 1 to 2 weeks. How do you get 10% of a tablet this small?

@bk63 I use Clonazepam. Much easier to cut or taper. I started with 1.5mg in November 2018 and slowly shaved off 10% every 2 weeks. I am down to using a .50 pill which cuts in half very nicely. So I used the half pill which is .25. And I am slowly cutting little pieces off. It is working great! No withdrawals at all. Just a little hard to fall asleep. I hope all of you are doing good. Don’t give up. And thanks for all your tips. The melatonin helps me and drinking lots of water. I’m going to get some zinc and magnesium to take also.

Mine is actually clonazapam. Small blue (sometimes green depending on pharmaceutical company). Thanks for your encouragement. Anxious to get started

My first choice would be a compounding pharmacy.
Also crush the medication and weigh it. A pharmacy may help you measure it.

@bk63
You may have to cut off smaller pieces the closer you get to zero.

@jakedduck1 Hi, I have all little pieces of the .25 mg in my pill box. How much do you think I should be taking before I “jump off”. My retired neurologist always told me if I go off, that I could go every other day and see how that works, or every other 2 days. I’m not sure what my body will do with zero Clonazepam in it. But I have been doing good so far. 😁 I read that it takes 7/8 days to get out of your system. Thanks for all your good help.
