@osteopatient2026 your description is accurate, it is a mine field.

So far so good. I take it one day at a time.

I will get another dexa this coming January, curious what the results will show. Doesn’t really matter, my decision to not take bone meds will not change.

The dexa I had in 2018, I was 59 yrs old at that time, is what prompted the endocrinologist I was seeing for my Hashimotos, to talk to me about bone meds. I had several dexa's prior to that which showed osteopenia and then osteoporosis, but NO doctor ever brought up the subject of treatment, and at the time I was too naive to be looking into anything myself.
So in 2018 - Femoral Neck -3.5, Total Hip -2.6, Lumbar Spine -2.3
At the time I was completely clueless, when the doctor recommended Prolia - I said yes...
After losing 75% of my hair, and constant UTI's, I told the doctor that I would not take the next injection. I had 3 injections in total. That's when I was told I could not stop without the risk of rebound fractures.
I was told to take Fosamax as a relay- and I did that for 6 months, during which time I lost 20% of my body weight, and could barely get out of bed. I had to stop to save myself. So by the Fall of 2020 I had stopped all bone meds.
In July of 2022 the first of 6 pelvic fractures occurred. These were identified as Prolia rebound fractures. I was put on Forteo - within 3 months I was taken to the hospital - I had developed Hypercalcemia- along with the heart palpitations I was dealing with on a daily basis.
I was then put on Alendronate - same situation occurred as Fosamax. And then finally I was put on Raloxifene - besides the hot flashes, I dealt with heart racing and skipping beats. I stopped this on my own.
So in January 2025 - when I met with my endo - not the same one that had prescribed Prolia, she suggested Evenity-----I literally laughed out loud!!!
My dexa this past January, same machine as always, was Femoral Neck -3.2, Total Hip -2.5, and Lumbar Spine -2.0
I finally found a doctor that would prescribe HRT - and guess what???, the Progesterone caused fainting and the Estrogen patch caused the worst racing heart I had ever experienced.
I was not ready to give up, so after a few months, I started Strontium Citrate - built my dose up over a few weeks. Yup, I broke out in a very painful rash all over my body! Once I stopped the Strontium, the rash cleared up in a few days.
The last time I have taken anything for my osteoporosis besides my usual stack of supplements, was at the end of Summer.
In all my life I never had an issue taking prescription medication. Its only my opinion, but I think Prolia messed with my immune system, which it is known to do, and this has led to all the issues I've experienced since taking it.
What is my plan? - continue with my supplements, continue getting minimum 30 minutes a day of exercise, and continue to eat a healthy diet. These things are good for my overall well being anyway. I also focus on balance exercises - which is super important. I know none of this will stop the bone loss.
I am a full time gardener and keep chickens as well. This and my grandchildren bring me much joy - I do not think about osteoporosis.
I have learned a great deal about this condition over the last 5 years, and had I understood that once you start these drugs, you will be on them the rest of your life, had that been explained to me from the start, I would have never agreed to take them.
My perspective is based on my experience, everyone has to make the journey on their own terms.
I hope you don't mind that I laid my full story out - but maybe my experience can help someone else.

@sondrachristo1 Thank you for convincing me not to start on Prolia. I will be 76 soon and have only a Lumbar Spine reading of -3.7 to justify my PCP's desire to start my osteoporosis treatment with Prolia. The other two readings are osteopenia level. Her argument is that the reading shows a .7 decrease in bone density in one year. Even the dexa technicians warned me that two readings on two different machines might not give an accurate picture. Also, the fact that I am Asian made no difference to my PCP. Studies have shown that Asian women have earlier onset of menopause, lower bone density, but also lower rates of osteoporosis-related fracture. I would like to spend my few remaining productive years finishing projects rather than going through what you describe. I wish you didn't have to. Courage, my friend! There is always advancement in the field and studies with different populations.

@joyceh2025 When it comes to medical treatment, we should be open to what the doctor says, do our research, know our bodies, and make our decision based on all the data.
Perhaps, due to the fact that I have autoimmune conditions, these bone meds, especially Prolia which is contra-indicated for anyone with an autoimmune disease, affected me so terribly.
Please do not use my specific experience alone to sway your decision. Do your research, look at your own specific situation.
Have you fractured? Anyone in your family fracture? Any other health issues? All of this matters.
Has your doctor checked for other causes for your low bone density? For example—thyroid or parathyroid issues, gut absorption issues, some meds can cause bone loss too.
This condition is complex, none of the current bone meds are an actual cure, they are a bandaid. You stop the meds, the condition returns, so taking meds requires a life long commitment.
I hope my words give you something further to think about, good luck.

You mentioned that you were put on the bisphosphonate Fosamax in the beginning…then later on Alendronate…they are the same drug…?
What was the issue with Evenity…the possible cardiovascular side effects…heart attack stroke?

@osteopatient2026 yes, they are basically the same drug, I was put on a lower dose of the Actonel in the hope it wouldn’t trigger any side effects.
After prolia caused 6 rebound fractures, and 4 other meds that caused serious side effects, of which 2 of the meds caused enough damage to put me in the hospital, I am not willing to take anything else.
Besides, you have to follow Evenity with another drug to keep the gains, which is so typical of these meds, so there is no drug I can take as a follow up.
Puts me on a very tough spot.
