IUD

Hello! I am here to ask for some words of encouragement and advice. I am receiving an IUD on Friday and I am super nervous. I deal with a lot of pain and Menorrhagia which means I bleed heavily. I also have PCOS. If the IUD does not work then the next step is a uterine ablation. I have tried birth control pills, the shot and now to the IUD. It is so frustrating going through this. I am so nervous to get the IUD because that was the last thing I wanted to have to do. Thank you in advance!

Hi @mads20. My daughter (41) had similar issues and has had 2 IUDs over the past 10 years. She’s sitting here visiting with me right now and I asked her if she has suggestions for you. Incidentally the IUD has helped her endometriosis and excess bleeding.
It can take time for your body to get used to having this small device in your uterus due to the hormonal changes. You won’t actually feel the IUD once it’s in place but the first few days after insertion can a little uncomfortable, much like having period cramps.

The IUD will slowly release hormones which may bring about changes in your period during the first few months. You may have some ongoing spotting or cramping but it lessens over time. My daughter is very sensitive to hormones and was not able to take the Pill because of the side effects. She is able to tolerate the hormone levels with the IUD much better.

My daughter is also recommending, if your practitioner hasn’t already done so, to take a couple of Advil or Ibuprophen an hour to an hour and a half before your appointment. It can help with the discomfort. Better yet, if you can speak to your gynecologist before your appointment, see if you can get a medication to help to relax your cervix before placement. The placement goes very quickly!!

I hope it all goes smoothly for you and helps out your situation. I know my daughter suffered for years and finally, the IUDs have been so helpful for her. We’re both sending a hug!
