Is too much airway clearance damaging?

Posted by jnmy @jnmy, 4 days ago

I read not long ago that too aggressive airway clearance wasn’t good for the lungs. Was it @sueinmn who mentioned that it can create more phlegm/ mucus as a result?

We all do our best to clear most mucus and people comment on a change of colour being an indication that the nasty stuff is huff coughed out. Or spending 15-20 minutes or so , twice daily, is the right amount of time, on a regular day with no exacerbations. It seems that nothing is ever quite regular though for many people.

Can this be explained further? Why or how could we produce more mucus if we overdo the twice daily airway clearance? Is it dangerous to the health of the lung?

Thanks!

@jnmy Yes, it was me - I am on my way out for some appointments, so I don't have time to look for the reports. I put it on my to-do list for the evening.

I found a lot to read - much of it from Europe, and heavy on stats. So it's going to take some time. I think I have to print it all out and study.

Since I started nebbing 7% saline a few months ago, my mucus quickly became clear and gradually reduced in volume. I assume my regimen of AeroEclipseXL + Aerobika 2x daily is sufficient, as I am healthy, feeling well overall, and barely coughing.

I occasionally try the "huff-cough" and almost every time it makes me gag ("paroxysmal cough"), without any noticeable benefits. So I figure that's not a good idea for me and don't do it. If I get another severe respiratory infection I will try it then, but as an everyday thing when I'm healthy I don't see why I should make myself gag.

I had to stop airway clearance because it was causing so much inflammation. Tried going back to it at a very low saline solution, but it led to very painful coughing and chest pain.
I get in as much exercise and walking as much as possible!

I should add that my pulmonologist is the one who made the decision that I had to stop.

Yes it is damaging, but notvjust too lungs. I am 75 yrars old snd have had bronchiectasis since I was 16. Because of all the airway clearance coughing and clearing my throat for all those years, I have now developed tracheal malacia (tracheal collapse). I now must use a Bi-pap machine each night to improve my condition.

Good question.
I've been thinking about this.
I will try the huff cough and feel pain in my back.
I have osteoporosis and scoliosis.
Definitely don't need more pain.
Same with airway clearance.
I have to remind myself to slow down and not to exhale so hard.
