Is there treatment available for advanced dementia patient?

My wife was diagnosed with dementia approximately 8 years ago. We live at home with a trained caregiver and our two dogs.
She currently has restrictive body movement, mostly visible in the neck area, is unable to read or write, and her speech is limited, with difficulty verbalizing her complete thoughts. While she appears to understand discussions, she will ask questions. For instance, where is the bathroom? Her movements towards that location are very animated (giving her directions, turn right, etc.). She is very mobile, active, eats very well, and sleeps well with medication. Her mood is generally pleasant, with medication that dampens sun downers and evening "I want to go home" comments.
Her doctor says she is too advanced to use any of the new drugs to slow the dementia process. What or where can we go or do to at least try?

I recommend that you contact your local Alzheimer’s Association for information and resources. Unfortunately there is no cure for this disease and treatments at best slow the progression of dementia however drugs are given only in early stages and they carry a lot of risk of brain hemorrhage. There are many non medical ways to enhance the life of someone with Alzheimer’s. Support groups can help you too. The Association also has a 24 hr hotline to answer questions. All the best.
