Can hyperparathyroidism be helped by removing the parathyroids? CKD

Have secondary hyperparathyroidism due to the kidneys. Can the parathyroids be removed (and then taking parathyroid pills forever) help this horrible situation? Am now in stage 4 kidney.

Yes, sometimes the parathyroid glands removed in kidney disease, Usually vitamin d is prescribed. You have a nephrologist I'm supposing. Have you considered a kidney transplant.

peach414144, 👋hi, possibly I can add some more info regarding secondary HPTH. I am 2 days away from my parathyroid surgery. I live in CA, but my research kept coming back to two centers: FL and AZ, these drs ONLY handle PTH surgery, for all reasons.
Parathyroid.com=FL center, tons of info and calculators
swparathyroid.com=AZ center, tons of info, small calculator.
Since I have NO kidney disease, like you; and I'm only minimally functioning tonight I will keep it short. I probably won't check this site for 1-2 weeks, due to travel, surgery, travel, hopefully 🤞 🤞🤞I will have a great reaction to the surgery, but I have many other issues that are in the mix, that could actually get triggered to the bad.
I , 45 years old, female, started with secondary HPTH, due to malabsorption. 4 years of radically high vitamin D doses, eventually I was diagnosed with celiac disease with severe small intestinal villi damage. I was born with celiac, but I was and still am asymptomatic, I react the opposite to lots of things. I am skipping the next 16 years.
Now, my calcium has been trending up for 5-8 years, NOT A SINGLE DOCTOR mentioned calcium with PTH.
I am 65, I have converted from secondary to primary/tertiary , it is believed that I do not have any adenomas, my glands are overworked and stretched out, this cannot be fixed with any medication. My PTH, can't control itself. I will have 3 1/2 of the 4 glands.
I am so sorry you have stage 4 CKD, that sucks.
I am sorry I just can't write more now. The two websites are invaluable tools to get a lot of answers. Also, there is an AI APP, POE, that I have used to ask the tons of questions about this subject. It's free, it's extremely easy, useful, and SMART ‼️‼️ Not to replace your drs. Just get really informed. Good luck with the research. What are your blood levels for all concerned?

I would be happy to share my experience and research, OMG, volumes.

Hi @peach414144, I moved your discussion to the Kidney & Bladder support group to connect you with other members living with stage 4 kidney disease.

Surgery that removes your parathyroid glands is called parathyroidectomy. You may need this surgery if one or more of your parathyroid glands makes too much parathyroid hormone (hyperparathyroidism). Hyperparathyroidism can cause you to have too much calcium in your blood. That can lead to a number of problems, including kidney disease.

Peaches, has a parathyroidectomy been recommended for you?

Had signs and symptoms of Parathyroid disease for 5 years before it was identified after the Family Practice physician left the clinic and another took his place Took her about 10 minutes in reviewing my labs to suspect that I had a parathyroid tumor. By that time I had kidney damage, Stage 3, kidney stones and the worst osteoporosis most physicians have seen, -3t, not to mention the severe hypertension that caused nose bleeds. I know of only one place in Tampa Florida that I would go. The Center addresses medical issues with thyroid, parathyroid, and adrenal glands. Had a 1 inch tumor on one parathyroid gland removed! Resolved the blood pressure issue but was left with the other deficiencies! Ask questions, be your own advocate and do your research!
