Is there a supplement that really works?
I was diagnosed 6 years ago with osteoporosis. I thought I was doing everything possible to build bone density but my latest bone density showed it got worse by 6%. I am taking a supplement called ‘bone-up’ which is supposed to be natural and has StimuCal. I’m wondering if there are better supplements out there that really help? Has anyone seen positive bone density results? If so, I would love to know what you are taking and doing. By the way, I’m 65, and try to be fairly active. Thank you.

Well as I said. I've been taking it for 8 months. My bones stopped aching, I'm back to doing housework I wasn't able to do before, not having the daily muscle spasms from just moving, etc. The dexascan showed a 12% improvement. I believe God has given us the ability to heal through food and not always through hard narcotics. You make a statement that is isn't doing anything for me but I guess the proof is in my dexascan and the results I'm feeling. It works for me. The side effects to many of these other drugs that you are on for the rest of your life - and the many people who testify they wish they had never gone on them - was enough for me to try it. I will continue this and now plan to incorporate a muscle building program and think I might be able to go back to pickle ball. Have no idea if it will work for anyone else can only say what it did for me. Have a nice day.
I'd like to remind members of the Community Guidelines, in particular the section about giving medical advice (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/blog/about-connect/tab/community-guidelines/):
1. Be careful about giving out medical advice:
- Sharing your own experience is fine, but don't tell other members what they should do.
- Experiences and information shared by members on the Mayo Clinic Connect are not a substitute for professional medical advice, diagnosis or treatment.
- Never disregard professional medical advice or delay in seeking it because of something you have read on the community.
Osteoporosis is unfortunately one of those diagnoses that has many companies and individuals selling promises with supplements, exercise equipment or exercise programs. This is not to say that some cannot help or do not work, but it is important to discuss any supplements with your provider to help decipher what can be helpful or potentially harmful.
While many members in the osteoporosis group weigh the pros & cons of treatment and seek experiences from one-another, it is also important to keep this community guideline in mind as well:
2. Remain respectful at all times.
- Exercise tolerance and respect toward other participants whose views may differ from your own. Disagreements are fine, but mutual respect is a must.
Oh one more thing the 2 fractures in my spine have healed.
Glad to hear these supplements are helping you! Could you please tell us the name of the lady you are referring to? Is she who recommended the supplements you are taking or was it through the Mayo dr. you saw?
I’m also wondering if anyone is familiar with Michael Lavacot? I was listening to his youtube video on Osteoporosis Medications and thought I was listening to Dr. McCormick until I looked closer.
He is a member of Connect.
thank you njhornug! I will look him up.
Fractures are going to heal in time no matter what. The calcium and magnesium may have helped you feel better. A drop of what is 99.9% water didn't do it,
I'm sorry, but homeopathy is quackery. There is no reputable medical body in the world that supports it.

Phyllis is an iridologist. I've seen her many times over past 25+ years
and she has resolved stomach issues, helped menopause issues, etc. And yes
she is the one that recommended the supplements. She is at Rock Creek Herb
Co. Sapulpa, OK
I wouldn't belittle homeopathy we actually have not idea how anything really does work, given that quantum physics throws up all sorts of questions around conventional science. There is also a question around how one researches a treatment where it is not possible to research using conventional quantitive research. I don't personally use it. But I have a healthy respect for those people who do and have benefited from it.
Sorry you feel functional medicine and holistic health is quackery. Give it a few years and I believe you will see the importance of it!
