@sandav Welcome to Connect. You have been through a lot. I don't know if a steroid injection will help, and that determination needs to come from your doctor. You are still in an early recovery stage from a traumatic injury. That takes a lot of time. I can relate with a traumatic injury in a serious ankle fracture that had 3 surgeries. (external stabilization cage, internal fixation, removal of hardware later). It has been 4 years, and only now has it normalized to where I'm not constantly aware of the injury. I think a lot depends on if you had nerve damage during the injury which sounds likely. I felt my nerves firing after my ankle fracture and I gently straightened my ankle to relieve that pressure because I didn't know if it would damage nerves further to leave it. It was about 3 or 4 hours from the injury to surgery. Peripheral nerves do sometimes heal and regrow, and that takes time, even years depending on how much re-growth is required.

I just had my foot elevated a lot to reduce swelling, and I would get residual swelling for a few years. My ankle also clicks and may slightly change alignment. I do my best to get it moving again when it seems to get locked. I have also found that I have to massage muscles on my lower leg (both sides) to equalize the tension. One side is stronger and all of it puts pressure on tendons and ligaments and that was like living with a sprain all the time until I figured out how to equalize the tension.

Are you able to have physical therapy? Have you thought about trying water therapy to try to work on walking with the buoyancy of the water helping to hold you up? A steroid injection doesn't fix anything. It can reduce inflammation and that may help reduce pain, but it also may not help. With your type of injury, a lot of patience is needed in healing. Listening to music and relaxation may help reduce pain. Are you diabetic? It is worth asking questions if a steroid injection would make that worse.

You don’t say when your accident was and as a retired nurse and back pain sufferer post lumbar fusion it’s hard to offer you advice. Have you been in PT yet? You’re correct steroids can do harm if given too often but as a bandaid they are fantastic. So depending on where you are in the healing process whether steroids are the answer.
