Is anyone experiencing increased GERDS/Acid Reflux?

Posted by rhondat23 @rhondat23, Sep 14, 2023

For many years I have been on generic Prilosec and after trying Fosamax I had to start taking Famotidine as well for severe Acid Reflux. I have had both upper/lower scope and everything checks out fine. I started Evenity in June and now I am experiencing severe acid reflux even while taking Prilosec and Famotidine. Has anyone else experienced an increase in acid reflux while taking Evenity?

Next week I have an appointment with a Nutritionist and am hoping they can help.

I know both of these acid reflux medications can contribute to osteoporosis. However, I have tried stopping but my acid reflux is too bad. I have tried ginger tea, not eating (chocolate, onions, garlic and tomatoes) but none of this seems to help. Prior to starting Evenity I had my acid reflux well controlled. I don't believe acid reflux is a listed side effect, so I am reaching out to see if anyone in our support group is experiencing the same issue and has figured out a way to alleviate the discomfort. Thanks for your support!!!

I too have had on and off issues with acid reflux and at one time took omeprazole - was off for many years - until I started fosomax and acid reflux returned-Endo Dr. suggested Evenity and I have had my 8 th shot and and all was good but just recently have started with acid reflux again!!!

Did the reflux start after your 22th shot ended? I’ve been coughing and spitting up mucous since stopping evenity…course it may be something else…how would we know? Ideas?

Sounds like we had the same digestive history and issues. I solved the immediate problem by giving up on Tymlos - there were so many other problems with it/me - and switching to Evenity. However I am still dealing with the leftover side effects of Tymlos.

I’m glad you weighed in and happy you were able to find a workable remedy.

Cheers!

mlwh,
Gerd is the reason that I have been declining the oral bifosphonates for 20 years.
I thought gerd sufferers were supposed to start out sleeping on their left side?

Susan, you are so right. LEFT side. I mis-spoke.

I'm on tymlos for about 8 months and have been diagnosed with "silent reflux" . The symptoms are as you described: post-nasal drip, pgelm, constant throat-clearing, light cough. Few actual symptoms of what i thought of as acid reflux! but the Dr suggested cutting back on acidic foods (my biggie was cold seltzer) and Prilosec and Flonase.

I developed GERD almost to the day after receiving my last injections. Was not diagnosed for months, voice was hoarse, constipated, burning in chest. Had colonoscopy, endoscopy, and upper endoscopy. Did make Spence because of my lifestyle. I do have IBS for over 10 years, but never needed to take medication. Walk 3 to 4 miles several times a week, small meals 4 times a day. (Sometimes a big meal if I go out to dinner) 😁. No soda, juices or carbonated drinks. I Drink lots of water. Alcohol once in a while socially. I eat very healthy nothing in excess. My second gastroenterologist said do you want to try natural (which will take more time) or take medication. I’ve been eating two kiwi a day, peppermint tea at least 3 times a week. Of course I don’t eat food (tomatoes, cabbage, etc) that aggrieves the GERD. Though sometimes I do but I take a pepcide an hour before seems to work. My bloating which I had 6 months is completely gone my voice only gets hoarse once in a while. I’m not saying don’t take meds sometimes you do need them. I like to try natural first when I can. As of now, I’m not on any type of medications 🙏. So YES I think it was caused by EVENITY. I still have to have my bone density test to see if it worked.

I have been suffering from GERD since the start of Evenity, now done with it and on Tymlos again (I started and stopped 3 months in to try Evenity). I have tried everything, including PPIs and nothing seems to help. Now that I am off Evenity and on Tymlos, it must be these drugs. I have had some success going natural route- slippery elm and other concoctions. Having another scope soon which I know will also aggravate it ( as it did the first time). Wondering if others are still having trouble with GERD being aggravated no matter what they do, and if anyone has had luck with natural remedies?

I know this post is old, but wondering how you are doing and if you found any relief!

Thank you for responding. I have been on Prilosec since about 2012 and Famotidine since 2020. I was not aware of trigger rebound but that does describe my situation. Right now, just about any foods make it worse. I have scheduled an appointment with a Nutritionist. Hopefully they will be able to help with both my acid reflux and osteoporosis. I will also review the link you provided. Thank you again!!

I started out with famotidine and then moved to omeprazole. After experiencing severe acid reflux, a friend of mine told me to go see a gastroenterologist, so I did.
Had to have an EGD done and found out that my esophagus was worn out from the acid and I also have Barrett’s esophagus and hiatal hernia. A nutritionist is not who you want to see yet.
I would first go and find out how severe your Gerd is.
Basically I have had to change my entire diet. No fried foods no alcohol no chocolate no tomatoes no peppers no cucumbers. That includes anything fried like potato chips or corn chips, no orange juice no grapefruits, no salsa and no spicy anything if you want to nip it in the bud.
You do not want to take oral fosomax because it can harm the lining of your esophagus, if you don’t follow directions strictly. There aren’t a whole lot of options out there without serious side effects like stroke and heart attack so I’m double thinking the whole bone building drug thing.

@aslimruiz
I don’t do peppermint anything because it relaxes the sphincter and let’s acid up into your esophagus.

This is a very interesting post. I started on Evenity last August. Had 4 injections and had to stop due to severe allergic site reactions. I was warned by my dermatologist that I could have a systemic reaction. I wasn't ready to switch to Tymlos or Forteo because I will be traveling a lot this spring and didn't want to mess with carrying the meds nor injecting daily. I plan to switch in June. In the meantime, I opted for Evista. I had GERD for years and took Protonix, which was a huge help and I felt great. But then research showed a link with the proton pump inhibitors and osteoporosis, so I stopped taking it once I rec'd the osteoporosis diagnosis. None of my physicians knew about the link to bone loss. I am currently having a really bad flare of GERD and 10 mg of Famotidine isn't helping. I message my primary last night to see if there is something else I can take. Wondering now if the Evista is the cause as I have been on that since November, and need to reach out to my rheumatologist.
