Is anyone else sensitive to smells?
I’ve been dealing with symptoms for just over 3 years now, and received a diagnosis of fibromyalgia just recently. Since the start, I’ve developed this sensitivity to smell where I will start dry heaving at random smells. For example, opening the spice cabinet, giving my dog her food, or taking out the trash. Sometimes it’s not even triggered by smells, instead it’s after I eat a meal, or when I’m very stressed. And it always seems to be worse when I’m having a “flare day.” I never used to have this until I developed my other fibro symptoms. I was curious if anyone else has had a similar experience, and if so, any tips?

emmakf, I do believe sensitivity to smells and Fibromyalgia go together. I have a nose like a blood hound. I smell
things other people cannot smell. I gag sometimes due to how intense the smell is to me.
I have had Fibromyalgia for 30 years and I have not made a connection on a "flare day" and if my snozzolla is more sensitive on those days, but, I will pay closer attention.
I don't get dry heaves like you do, but, it's like the smell is so intensified to me.
Bless you and praying for you. It's no fun that's for sure.

2 ReactionsI’ve been dealing with the same issue as you are describing for decades. There are times I can’t smell anything for a few minutes, but I am reacting. My body can sense it. It is not easy as most people don’t understand What you are dealing with? For me, it hits my lungs and airways where I can’t breathe and when you start grasping for air, it’s not enjoyable. I think at times people think I am being rude to them, but I’m not it’s the smells
My oldest son also has issues with the smells, but I don’t know if he has fibromyalgia. That is a question. I will not ask him because he is an adult.
Going to church going to a meeting or going out with your friends is not easy. I feel over the years I have come to be more isolated due to my sensitivities to chemicals and food

Going to church going to a meeting or going out with your friends is not easy. Even going to the doctors office can be difficult. A lot of the staff don’t understand that body wash has chemicals in That I react to. I feel over the years I have come to be more isolated due to my sensitivities to chemicals and food

Wish the very best for you. It is not easy to navigate these waters.

1 ReactionI can smell smoke or skunk miles away.
Even nice scents like perfume bother me. Maybe you could wear a mask when you do certain things. A gentle reminder to friends that you would prefer not sitting next to someone wearing perfume is very common today.

1 Reaction@quilterfingers I thankfully haven’t had too many issues with perfumes, and if I do, it’s typically men’s cologne rather than a sweet smelling one. However, I like the idea of a mask. I’ll definitely keep it in mind. Thank you for your reply!
@covidstinks2023 Thank you, this was really helpful. Glad to know someone else deals with something similar, and I’m not going crazy! My thoughts are with you as well. I can’t even begin to image dealing with this for 30 years.
This is an interesting but wierd symptom of fibromyalgia. As I am sitting here I have got a horrible smell up my nose as if something has died. Thinking back it's often when I have a slight cold. Here in the UK I have noticed the weather becoming colder and my aches and pains have amplified but so has my sensitivity to smells. It's weird but horrible. I haven't been able to sort it but the dead rat smell is sort of what I am getting at. I am highly sensitive to the horrible smells out there but thankfully perfumes are something I can tolerate but are overwhelming in a nice amplified way.
