Intestinal Metaplasia: What do you do to lower the risk of cancer?

Posted by evapa @evapa, Apr 22, 2021

Has anyone been diagnosed with intestinal metaplasia? What does your doctor recommend? I was just diagnosed and am very anxious about it because of the risk of cancer. Would like to hear your experience with it. Thank you.

Hi - Unfortunately, our 19 year old got diagnosed with IM recently. Do you mind passing on the name and contact of the doctor that specializes in IM please? Thx

Hi @txmankc, as a mom, I'm sure you are worried sick about this diagnosis for your son.

Mayo Clinic specializes in GI neoplasia. You may wish to read more here:
- Gastrointestinal Neoplasia Clinic https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/gastrointestinal-neoplasia-clinic/overview/ovc-20357679

To inquire if Mayo Clinic might be an option for your son, you can speak with a coordinator http://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

How is he doing?

I got same sort of diagnosis after Mayo did my endoscopy biopsy. They were great at explaining it all to me. Mine however was precancerous. My advice is ask as many questions as you have. make a list, plan your appointment. What would you really like to know?
Use patient portals to get answers also.

Hope you are doing well!

Yes I may have silent reflux and I am careful with my diet. I am trying to get an appointment with a gastroenterologist who specializes in intestinal metaplasia. My regular gastroenterologist says it is not likely to develop cancer from it but I like to find out more and educate myself. It is good talking to you.

Cut all salt out of diet. No booze, soda, smoking of any type. Eat a gerd diet, low acid, low fat to prevent gerd. No Ibuprofen only tylenol. Don't eat before bed.

I’m in the same situation. I was diagnosed with IM a few days ago. I haven’t been able to sleep and I find myself really down.
I had H.pylori and treated a few years back. I’m pretty sure I got IM from that bug. I’m in my early 50’s.

I also have acid reflux. Approximately 3 years ago I had the Stretta procedure to correct the acid reflux. During the initial endoscope I had pre ulcers forming and erosive esophagus. After the stretta my erosive esophagus and my pre ulcers went away.

I just underwent another endoscope and the doctor said my esophagus looked good. I’m waiting for the Bravo study to verify my acid levels.

I really encourage everyone with acid reflux to do your research on the Stretta procedure.

Anyone have any suggestions on Intestinal Metaplasia? Can it be removed at an early stage through retraction? Who specializes in IM?

I have the same as you, early 50’s , IM, acid reflux, ulcers, but taking 40g of pentaprozole and I had a second endo and doctor said looks much better. I do have to stay on the pentaprozole. I’m feeling good. I just try to eat healthy nothing fried, no red meat, wash products very well. I don’t think IM is reversible but I do think you can control it by eating healthy.

I don't know if your husband is a coffee drinker like me but I buy Healthwise low acid coffee on amazon. For creamer I use almond milk which will neutralize any acid in the coffee. I drink 2 cups a day.

Yes he loves coffee alot but he stopped it due to this illness. Good to know that there are such options.
