Insatiable Eye Itching

Posted by AZ @equanimous, Jan 13 7:09pm

I get an incredible itching sensation in the inner corner of my eye, usually occurs in the left one and occasionally in the right. If I give in and itch it, what follows is hours & hours of non-stop sneezing, watery eyes, stuffed nose and overall misery. My dr has prescribed antihistamine drops and I've tried all sorts of over the counter allergy eye drops. Nothing works. I have also tried cold compresses and allergy eye wipes which help a tiny bit. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience and may have found something that helps. Your input is greatly appreciated.

I’ve had eye itching before, but I probably have something different from you. I didn’t have all your symptoms. But, I would have my eyes checked thoroughly by an ophthalmologist to rule out anything with you eyes. You might check with allergist too. I’d try to address it, because scratching your eyes can damage the corneas. I hope you can find someone who can figure it out.

I've had eye problems and worn glasses since I was 6 and I'm currently 77. I've never had the problems that you do but my eyes do itch from time to time. Celia16 is correct about seeing an ophthalmologist and an allergist is also a good idea too! You only have one pair of eyes so take good care of them. Prayer also works! God can direct you to the right ophthalmologist and allergist! I'll say a prayer for you also.

Arlo, I have this when I have an allergy flare. My itches right in the tear ducts it seems. I don't know if you have tried Pataday drops for it or not, but, it usually will stop mine within a few minutes. You can buy the one that you use once a day or the one that you use twice a day over the counter. I have also used Zadiator before which is over the counter. Make note of anything in your surroundings and what you have been doing or exposed too. Example: Did you just dust? Have you been out in the wind? Is it high pollen season in your area? (You can check online for your state and what allergies are high). I get the sneezing with allergies, but, not always when my eyes itch. Have you tried an antihistamine at night like Zyzal? I have to take the child's in this...5mg at bedtime. This helps with sinus drainage for me and perhaps it could help your itching eyes when you have an attack. I pray you get some relief.

Thanks for your message. I have tried Pataday and Zaditor and they did not help. I will check out Zyzal. When I went to the eye dr, she really had no explanation and did not offer a referral to an allergist. I will inquire with my primary care dr and as him for referral. Thanks again, I really appreciate your help.

@equanimous, I think you have received good advice as far as seeing an ophthalmologist and an allergy doctor. After my cataract surgeries, I used an OTC product, Alaway for eye itch relief. That is all I have to offer, but hope you will find some relief soon. With all good wishes, @joybringer1

You might consider taking an oral antihistamine as well as using antihistamine eye drops. I have a huge allergy to cats and sometimes when I have contact with someone who has a cat and I am away from my eyedrops I use an ice cube placed over my closed eye. It tends to bring down the swelling as well as rinse the allergen out of the eye as the cube melts. I wish you good luck. Itchy eyes are maddening.

Thanks for your post. Yes, I use an ice cube wrapped in a paper towel. It is helpful.
