Inner shingles

Posted by paulinybeany @paulinybeany, May 16 10:19am

My daughter has been suffering for about 5 weeks. Multiple scans, chest x-rays, ultrasound for gall bladder. All negative. she has a slight rash on her back. She is in constant pain, not sleeping, etc. Squeezing, painful sensation in chest and back. Could it be inner shingles? No meds are helping pain, gabapentin, etc.

Hello @paulinybeany and welcome to Mayo Connect. I can understand your concern. I had Shingles several years ago, and I know the pain is difficult to deal with. For me, the pain was severe for about five weeks and then began to lessen. Has she been diagnosed with Shingles?

I am glad she is being followed up with scans, ultrasounds, etc. I'm wondering if she has been seen by a dermatologist? Dermatologists are experts in rashes and other skin problems.

I look forward to hearing from you again. Will you post updates and let me know how she is doing?

She has just been diagnosed with inner shingles and is on oxycodone, and on an antiviral. She has blisters inside her mouth and says it feels like she has others
further down. Thank you for your concern. At least she was able to get some sleep last night, aside from the intense pain, sleep was a major problem. I will update later.

Her doctor has consulted with infectious disease physicians, and they have scheduled additional blood work. Will post later with more. Thank you again for your concern.

It is late in the history but if there is active rash take photos for future reference. With active blisters they may consider an oral antiviral like
Valtrex.

She is on Valtrex now, along with oxycodone. Pictures were taken at onset, and we've been tracking. Blisters have now merged and are not as red. However, she is still in pain. Waiting for doctor with regard to new bloodwork. Thank you!

I hope that your daughter begins to feel better and that the root of the problem is better understood by her medical team.

When it is convenient for you, could you post an update, @paulinybeany?

An MRI is going to be scheduled. Valium was prescribed to help her sleep but did not help. She is extremely tired. Magic Mouthwash was prescribed which has made her more comfortable. The doctor is looking into Coxsackey virus. Also, has been experiencing what she describes as squeezing in her torso. In our research Devil's Grippe came up. Some type of pleurisy? Will update when we have more information.
