Inflammation, face gets hot and red

Posted by januaryjane @januaryjane, Jan 23, 2020

I started having "face flares" around 2 yrs ago. My cheek(s) and/or ear(s) get beat red, hot to the touch, and swell. I got tested up and down, no not lupus, not anything they could pin down. I finally saw an infectious disease dr who blamed this inflammation on recurring ebstein barr virus.
Anyway, no one has really helped me out with this and im having attacks daily. My hands and feet will sometimes do the same. I feel like im on fire.
Im concerned about all the ibuprofen im taking, though im taking under daily max.
I watch my diet to avoid as much inflammation as possible. Does anyone have any insight to what could be happening?

Yours truly, Miserably sick

@januaryjane there is another discussion on Connect for Erythromelalgia with the same symptoms except not with the face. I did learn that it can occur in the face only and be very hard to diagnose. Here is a link to the discussion on Connect and also the article for the symptoms in the face.

Good morning @januaryjane
Have you been able to find any answers for your Red, hot skin? Have you gone to a dermatologist? I certainly hope you get some answers soon!

I havent talked to my derm yet, but am going to soon. I dont get hives or anything, but i do not think its eczema or rosacea. I see a new Rheumatologist in march, hoping he can shed some light.

I have read your posts and have the same! For me wheat was the trigger. And I suspect a connection between wheat and ebv

Welcome, Abby. Did you discover that you have a gluten intolerance in general? What other ways has avoiding wheat helped you?

I have gluten insensitivity and when I make a mistake I can feel that awful flushing. Mine is usually limited to face and torso. Flushing may be the symptom to track down and good luck with that. Look at every med, possibilities of mold, everything you eat drink or breath and unfortunately FEEL, emotions too can be a trigger. I am paying attention and am having some luck. Drink huge amounts of water if it is flushing and try to be calm, relax. Highly counterintuitive to relax, but it helps me. Good luck
