I have to choose between Indiana vs. Ileal pouch surgery

Posted by adecrosta @adecrosta, Nov 2, 2021

I have serious radiation cystitis in my bladder and have to make a decision between having an Indiana procedure (bladder removal with a stoma and an internal urine pouch composed of a section of my intestine) or the ileum procedure (bladder removal with a stoma connected to an external Foley bag). Both are high risk surgeries, I am told, and both require considerable post-surgical habit changes. Does anyone have any experience with either of these procedures that can you help me make my choice between the two?

Welcome, @adecrosta. It is always so hard to make these types of choices. I added your question to the Ostomy group (https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/ostomy/) I did this so you can connect with others who may be able to provide their experiences like @pjebp @katydid77 @dideon @duckduck2020 @engelee

When will you have the procedure done?

I am considering having the procedure early next year, January or February. It's not an emergency, more an inevitability. Thanks for your assistance.
