Improve bone density and strength without medication?

Posted by plav @plav, Dec 20, 2023

Any luck improving bone density and strength without medication? It seems the medications only mildly help ... and they only help some patients; some studies show the slight improvement in density does not mean quality bone was built. I'm not comfortable with moving forward with the treatments just because "that's what we give patients with osteoporosis". There seems to be no room for education or discussion, or research into actual results or other options.

I understand that we all have to make decisions based on our personal health and what we feel comfortable with. But I want to share that due to an inmunne disorder, I had been prescribed steroids for decades. Two years ago I found out that I had oestoporosis. As a hiker, I had not been aware of fracture dangers. A year after starting Tymlos I had another bone density test. Doctors were surprised by the result. Last October I had another test. Even the doctor who read it gave input of how great the result has been. I am one of the "lucky" ones who had benefitted from this drug. I do agree with you that we are not given information about other ways we can improve our bone health. When I got the diagnosis, I asked for a PT referral so that I could get information about the right way to go about my daily activities. It helped greatly and u did not get another fracture. I have continued hiking. Thank you for sharing about strontium. Good luck to you.

Plav, what’s your current t-score? If you’re a -3 or or higher, then by all means try the best natural bone-building route you can find, but if your DXA is any lower, please consider a medication.

After my osteoporosis diagnosis (DXA -4), I did everything right: AlgaeCal and collagen, exercise, weight lifting, and healthy diet. I had always been a strong, athletic person, and I vowed I would never take bone meds. Then one day >crack< , and my life changed. One vertebra fractured, causing an “avalanche” effect on other vertebrae.

I’ve healed, but some pain remains and my mobility and stamina are limited. I plan to continue my natural regimen, but this month I start taking Evenity. I will do anything to prevent further fractures.

I feel that most doctors emphasize only the possibility of hip fractures. If mine had told me that my SPINE could collapse, with consequences of extreme pain, loss of height, and organ crowding, I would have been more likely to take meds and less likely to have experienced spinal fractures.

Regarding natural regimens, I do suggest limited consumption of foods high in oxalates since they bind with calcium and prevent your bones from absorbing it. Some high oxalate foods are shredded wheat, spinach, beans, certain berries, chocolate, and almonds. (All my favorites! 😩)

I pray you find the right path to increase your bone strength! 🙏❤️

@magzter1963

There are several subheadings here under Osteoporosis that have much discussion of strontium.

@kathleen1314 So 360mg? Just read this below so a little confused what the 360mg studied is. "Secondly, if you have osteoporosis then there is an amount of strontium that has been shown to work for osteoporosis and it isn't a trace; it is 680mg daily. "

@loplady
Yes, the research says for osteoporosis the dose which works is 680 mg of strontium daily.

@kathleen1314 What was the 360mg referencing? I apologize, I can't find where that was now.
