Important information about statins that I’m going to ask my doc about

Posted by Barb @amberpep, Aug 10, 2020

Just a bit of information I discovered last week. One of the side effects of taking "simvistatin" is temporary memory loss. It is the only statin that has this effect. I am going to talk to my .doctor about stopping it, with his guidance of course. I have had some short lapses in memory .... forgetting part of my phone number, etc.

Statins caused so many serious side effects, some rare, I refused to take them. Then I wrote this short poem that is to the point.

“What is the sense in living life?” “Just so you can live it?” “I all it gives you back to live.” “Is a life of pain and sadness!”

Doctors tell you that you need this pill, then that pill, then others to help you live longer, why? Back when I did everything my doctors told me to do or take these pills, guess what. By the time 13 different doctors prescribed 13 different types of pill, I was taking 42 pills a day, every day. They literally turned me into a prescription addict. Take a pill for this pain or that pain, a pill to go to sleep, a pill to wake me up, you name it and they told me to take a pill. Finally, I said enough is enough and got off everything. That was over 40 years ago and I refuse to take any medication yet unless I know exactly what it’s going to do to me and why. I don’t take any pain medications, none, pain tells your body somethings wrong with it. You deaden the pain with pills, how will you know how bad the damage is getting? I have a very bad heart birth defect, I’m 78, with my bp less than 140/80, recommended by 3 different cardiologist taking care of me. Then the AHA says, I must have a bp of 120/70, why? Because most people can’t get that low without, you guessed it, a pill. Gee, I wonder who came up with that recommendation? Remember my poem, I’m a freak of nature living in a hellish nightmare I cannot wake up from. Guess what, no medications, no pills and watch what I eat. My vitals this morning, 116/68 heart rate 67. Yesterday 111/64 heart rate, 65. Gee, think I’ll take a pill, a happy pill that is. Just become your own health activist and decide if you need the pill or is it a doctor saying you need to take it. Judge for yourself if your body actually needs it or will a life style change work instead, I did!!!

I've often heard the expression "we are what we eat". Good, clean foods loaded with nutrition is needed for health and vitality. Sweets, though tasty, enjoyed once in a while. Also worth mentioning, stress reduction and social interactions. A good laugh too!

I am enjoying keto cookies once in while, not much flavor but lots of crumbly texture and they don't effect my blood sugar. I love fresh fruit and used love salads but have avoid them now. The greems washed locally make me sick. I am immune challeged.

Exercise helps the body make more HDL so maybe some of that LDL can be, if not decreased, at least a smaller percentage of total cholesterol.

Exercise is something we have control of and beneficial for so many things.

I find these comments very helpful and expands my knowledge about cholesterol; I did not know about the additonal tests that are more revealing; I think I should look into this avenue. Thanks for sharing

I was prescribed statin when I was 40 years old. I am a small framed woman and have trouble with med side effects. I chose not to take them. I am now 64 and do have high LDL. But no other risk factors for heart disease. If anything were to change, I would revisit taking a statin.

Everything I hear about statins makes me not want to take them. My mother had high cholesterol numbers…. total cholesterol 300+. She lived to be 94 years old with no heart problems or strokes. No statins for me.

Another 90+ year old Superwoman with high cholesterol!

The first cardiologist I went to created the calcium score and respects, and treats, high cholesterol if others tests corroborate that there's a problem developing. But he's more concerned with type of cholesterol, including molecule size, stickiness and propensity to clump. And, studies since then have shown that exercise can help a body make more of the non-clumping cholesterol, meaning that its not all genetics as once thought. If your blood work only shows a number for total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and the basics, and not a deeper analysis, consider asking for a more comprehensive assay.

The Endopat is interesting. It's not painful but it is uncomfortable. It's purpose is to measure how quickly and thoroughly endothelial tissue rebounds after obstruction or obstruction, which is, in a sense, a test for stroke-safety. I went to a superstar cardiologist I could find, about 18 years ago as my relatives all died from heart disease and/or stroke in one form or another. Dr. A. put me through every test that might suggest a threat and the Endopat was the last one so I added it to not leave a stone unturned. The test itself includes wearing something similar to a tight blood pressure cuff for about 15 minutes and the software charts the various parameters as the tissue rebounds. The tests were reassuring as, despite bad genes and high cholesterol, the blood work categorized me as A/optimal risk profile, based primarily cholesterol molecule size. And backed-up by great non-bloodwork test results. So the kind of cholesterol can be more significant than the amount.
