What is life like living with an Ileorectal Anastomosis?
I have severe diverticulitis and I am going to get my colon removed and get the small intestine connected to my rectum. I am looking for people that had this same operation for feedback, how is the recovery, will I be able to live normal, would I be confined to my home because of how many times I’ll use the toilet. Any advice will be greatly appreciated because I’m terrified. Should I just get an ileostomy? I can’t find anyone that has had this surgery in any platform. Thanks!

Hi there
I had this surgery in March 2022. It was the best decision I ever made, as the quality and normalcy of life returned.
I too was frightened about multiple aspects of recovery. Each person's experience will have different and similar challenges. That said I did well but had to make some changes. Diet was adjusted w more frequent small portions of meals while avoiding gas producing or irritating foods. Another key to recovery was staying active, walking etc. This helped w bloating and improved strength and sense of wellbeing.
The surgeon recommended anastomosis v ileostomy. As a result, elimination was more normal. For about 6-8 months there were frequent trips to the bathroom 4-6x per day w some urgency. Now it's 2x/day wthout urgency.
With ileostomy, I was concerned about managing the bag, skin irritation, body image changes, and social/relationship concerns. With anastomosis all of this was a non issue. And knowing ileo-rectal anastomosis was available, reduced my stress considerably.
Your surgeon and nurse are best sources of info. They may also have patients who would agree to share their post recovery experience with you.
This is major surgery and will take time to recover. At the age of 68 and with other health issues, my surgery outcome is a resounding success story. Feeling so grateful as a result.
Best to you, Katherine

I am coming up on my second anniversary for my emergency total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis. My large bowel was blocked and I had diverticulitis. I have read what others wrote.. I also know where the bathrooms are and I agree that keeping the rectal area clean of any stool is important. Diaper rash is awful. I have a partially prolapsed rectum so it takes a bit more effort. Get wet wipes before you get home from surgery. I also got bidets installed in our toilets. I really recommend them. The only guidance I received about my diet was no beans, peas or corn. Those items and some types of fiber cause gas which is to be avoided. Raw vegetables I don't eat often. I have taken a "try it and see" diet. My bouts of diarrhea are more influenced by stress, emotional and physical. Doing too much physical activity in a day causes diarrhea, and getting emotionally upset does. My body now is sort of delicate. I was used to doing what I wanted and I now have to consider activity before I do it.

2 ReactionsHello. I had emergency surgery for diverticulitis back in early April, with a resulting colostomy. I am almost 82, and if I could get through the surgery and learn to embrace life with an ostomy bag, anyone can. I was also terrified but a wonderful ostomy nurse got me through. She came to our house several times and taught me how to manage my bag changes step by step, so I am now confident. Be convinced that you can manage, and you will. Forget luck. That has nothing to do with it. Determination and practice are what it takes. You will be ok. Bette
