How old is too old to ride a semi racing bike or a mountain bike?
I am 74, have not ridden a bike in over a decade, will have 2 new knees by next year, and had 2 hips replaced a few years ago. I walk a lot, 3-5 miles, 2-3.times per week plus gym 2 days per week for muscle strengthening. Maybe I should stick with safer walking, rather than risk injury on a new mountain bike??

I am well over 60. I was still working at 60. I am now 88 and basically I can do almost everything. But life is not all roses and champagne. My husband and I had 59 years of marriage and then he died. So did my right hip and I had to have it replaced - alone. Now my hip is healing but my heart is not. Still, I have my brain and I can drive. I live independently. I have a very nice lady who comes in once a month to clean. So far I don't seem to have any other ailments and so I go on.

So, to "thisismarilynnb" Seriously, I had to double check to see if I wrote this. I am the same age, worked until 65, was married almost as long. I now live alone, am very independent, can drive, shop, and have a cleaning lady who comes once a month ( she is here now). My thing is four back injection (about) every four months.( Failed foot surgery started that whole thing!) Now, I am stuck with Peripheral Neuropathy which is progressive. Reading these posts lets me know it could be a lot worse in the PN arena. Just thought it was interesting to see how much we have in common...so what do you do for fun?

I'll be 70 in February and bought a bike some months ago. It's defective though, it doesn't go straight very good. I have balance problems that makes my bike riding somewhat unsafe.
I have a friend who is 83 and she rides her bike every day and rides straight as an arrow.
I say go for it provided you don’t have any medical conditions that might make it dangerous.

Right now there is no fun in my life. After we finally had my husband's commitment on October 31st, I was finished with physical therapy and I feel empty. I am in therapy. No results so far. I have no physical problems but plenty of mental problems. It is my belief that I have just started to mourn for my husband - a year late. There are times when the pain of his loss is so great that I just scream and scream. I do not want to do anything or go anywhere. I am just locked in my grief. All say time is the great healer. But at 88 how much time is there?

I have a friend mid 70's bought a new mountain bike and lost control on a down hill trail and it set him back a lot.
I try to walk 3 miles a day 5 days a week and I believe it has been my salvation. I have 5 lb dumbells I use every day and I believe this has kept both the Parkinsons and neuroppthy slowed down significantly. I think I will add the gym. friends say "I wish I caould so that" everyone can - I started walking 25 yards 3 years ago. Very proud of what you have done.

I just attended a 10 week Grief Recovery Group with CMHA. It was wonderful. There are many kinds of grief. Loss of health, family members, loss of job, etc. I guess I had never thought of these as grief invoking. I went after I couldn’t get over the loss of my father. It just gutted me. I feel a bit better now. Bless your heart!

I love to read posts like yours. I am 81 and have been walking 7 days a week for about 2 miles for the past 4 years or so. I also attend senior active gym classes 3 times a week since I retired in 2013. We are lucky to have our class taught by a 82 year old core trainer and former athlete who focuses on what happens to us as we age and how to prevent falls.
It would be great if you could find a class like that in your area. I believe regular classes (which are also very social) are a big motivator. I applaud your use of weights and suggest you slowly increase the weight. If you are too comfortable with them, rather than maintaining that weight, you should strive to go further. I use 7 lbs in class and 8 lbs at home…started out with 4 lbs. Please include daily stretching in your routine…throughout the day…and balance exercises.
While I never had anything organically wrong with me aside from osteoporosis, I consider my exercise routine ( home and gym) and good diet my medicine for life.
Honestly, it shows and people generally don’t think I am anywhere near my age.

The key is doing the right things and doing them consistently…every single day. It doesn’t take too long to change the way you feel and improve overall health.
Do what you can can and then then more…just like you did. It will be such a habit that you will become addicted to it.

First of All, God Bless You! I’m sorry your going though this. Do you have children? And if yes do you have their emotional support? I know everyone has their own life and jobs and families to care for too. I have 2 grown daughters but I rarely see them. My husband is alive but his job keeps him gone 3 weeks out of a month, so I am alone most of the time. My saving grace is my fur babies. I have 2 dogs and 4 plus cats. So I am never really alone. They sleep with me which is very comforting. They love my attention. They are dependent on me, so they keep me busy. I believe they are Gods Gift for people like us. Without them I would be lost. They also bring joy and a sense of peace. They are my Angels. This is why Support animals are acceptable everywhere, they are truly necessary for a lot of people. I talk to my babies, I feel their love and I love them. They make my life worth living. You may already have pets, I don’t know, but if you don’t please get you one or 2 or 3, I promise they will change your life. They will heal your broken heart! Peace and love be with you my friend❤️😊😘

I am very sorry for you. It's not a good place that you are in. Now I have several women friends that live alone and I can't tell you the joy they get from their cats. I don't mean to slap an easy solution on what is a heart breaking problem but it has worked for my friends and I just wanted to share it with you...God Bless.
