I was prescribed Mirtazapine for sleep, but got achy legs??

Posted by cindisue @cindisue, Dec 30, 2023

Took mirtazapine for 2 weeks and had to start cutting in half because it gave me severely achey legs...making it hard to walk.....after taking 1 /2 a pill for a couple more weeks....legs were still very achy so I had to stop taking it completely. Now, almost 6 weeks since I quit taking it completely, my legs are better but still get very achy when walking distance. Anyone ever hear of this?? I'm hoping it gradually goes away completely. I pray it does. I read that Mirtazapine can cause arthralgia....sounds like what I have. I just hope it didn't cause permanent arthritis/arthralgia in my legs.....Ugh

Correction.....it has been almost 3 weeks since I completely quit taking it...just a warning about medication Mirtazapine.

I have been taking Magnesium Oxide, but I understand that there is also a Magnesium spray. I do use The Stick to massage my legs (it hurts, but relaxes muscles), and do hamstring stretches and edema-style massage. Midday, I have a microwaveable heating pad on lower legs. Some also find the yoga move of having your legs up against the wall for about twenty minutes helps with fluid movement. During the day, compression socks can help, also. Causes of symptoms, for me, is unknown and no images show anything. I recently had a "genticular nerve ablation" that has relieved the lower leg pain to a manageable point at night.

marye2 , okay...funny your doctors don't know what is causing it....I quit taking the Mirtazapine so it's getting better.....hopefully be totally gone soon. Maybe yours is arthritis??

cindisue, you had several good suggestions for your leg pains. I just discontinued mirtazapine (SNRI) after starting it in 2001 (believe it or not). At that time it was a life saver for me. My anxiety was so severe as a result of PTSD.
I never had any side effects except for a major weight gain (not a good thing in the long run) but at the time I was unable to eat due to anxiety/panic. And could not sleep...obviously this medication was exactly what I needed. And I suppose I simply continued with it - as my severe panic disorder, to this day, remains with me.
However, after 22 years it was no longer effective and gradually came off of it to start a new SSRI.
I never had any leg issues...and I remember at the time discussing side effects with my psychiatrist who never brought up possible leg pains as a s/e and never did during my entire follow up with him.
But that's not to say mirtazapine is not the culprit with your leg pain.
I would simply say continue to monitor it but if no improvement perhaps further testing is needed to rule out multiple potential causes - & there are many. Good luck.

I have heard that it can give some people restless leg syndrome.

Thank you...but 99%?sure it was caused by the Mirtazapine. Google Mirtazapine causing arthralgia...

Yes, I did. From what I read it is an uncommon side effect but listed nevertheless.
Certainly hope this is only a short term side effect which will resolve soon.
All the best.

I have restless legs syndrome... Jimmy legs . I don't know if this is close to the achy legs but am taking a low dose, PRN, of Mirapex which is a Parkinson's medication.
