Bowel obstructions caused by adhesions following abdominal surgery
I just joined this site and am looking to see if anyone talks about bowel obstructions caused by adhesions following abdominal surgery. I had successful sugery for colon cancer in 2008. About 6-months later I was hospitalized for 5 days with a bowel obstruction (that did resolve without further surgery). It took several months for my system to get back to "proper working order," but it did and for the past 5-years everything worked normally. Then, out of the blue, I had another bowel obstruction 2-months ago. I was hospitalized for 6-days, but again, no surgery. At this point I can only have bowel movements by taking Miralax and then I have diarrhea. I'm trying to eat a normal diet, just smaller amounts at a time and more frequently. I'm paranoid about another bowel obstruction, and also that my guy will not get back to normal. Has anyone had experience with this?

I have a friend at work who recommended olive oil, I have been using it for weeks now, I take 1-2 teaspoons daily and have not had to use miralax in weeks. I was taking miralax every couple days. Some times a few days in a row. I am on a low to no fiber diet as well after a small bowel obstruction on December due to adhesions. I am attaching a picture of the olive oil she gave me to use. I also researched it and actually found a study that was done on the effects of olive oil on SBO due to adhesions and the results were positive on decreasing the amount of time for it to resolve and time spent in hospital as the studies were done on patients in the hospital. I am in no way a doctor or a nutritionist but what I can say is this has been working for me for weeks now, knock on wood.
Thanks Danny you are absolutely correct, and that Dr, kept trying to convince me to come over to that "small private hospital" and join their team of Internists, when I already had a Primary Dr, who is affiliated with another large hospital. When I followed up with my primary I never gave her the discharge papers , and went back to my own GI Dr. right away. Good hospital in a pinch other than that I will stay away from the ER and get stuck under someone elses thumb,,
Good luck to you in your health challenges!! J
Thank you for the advice!!! One of my oldest friends had told me to do this awhile back, I just couldn't fathom getting it down but it worked for her elderly aunt who had issues,,,. and sounds like it is helping you,... Do you take it in the am or bed time??? I have a small can of specialty olive oil I bought at starbucks awhile back when they introduced it to put it in your coffee,,,, I never even opened it to try, .. I think I will start with that and look on Amazon for this one,,,, someone said castor oil I said I don;t think so,,lol , reminds me of being a child and getting that forced on me... You take care and continue to get better,, I will keep you posted how it works for me... 🙂 J
This one has no taste and smells sort of sweet. At first I did it with a shot of apple juice to chase it down haha. But now I do it no problem. Every morning. I was taking a teaspoon in the morning and one at night. Now I just take one every morning. I have had a bowel movement everyday accept one since I started using it. That one day I just took an extra teaspoon that night and next morning I went with no struggles. Hope it works for you also.
Lol... I am going to give it a shot literally, I think with a chaser .. Thanks for the tip.... I hope it helps,, at this point I am open to all suggestions, this one seems to be a good one,, Will let you know when I get it down.. 🙂
I have never heard of using olive oil to prevent further SBO. I had a SBO operation because of adhesions last November and was in the hospital 2 weeks. I am fine now. But I am very careful with food - no raw fruit or veggies and no salad. Everything very well-cooked, I use Miralax every day (dr said that was ok) plus one Colace and one Senna plus teaspoon of Metamucil. That seems to work for me. I will ask my doctor about olive oil. Also important to walk or get some exercise. I never want to have another SBO again.
yes things do get better!
I have scar tissue from 5 abdominal surgeries
I take Miralax everyday and a tablespoon of olive oil
I eat low fiber, but I include a little avocado and sweet potato and spinach everyday
I try to drink 65-80 ounces of liquid
So far I’ve been moving my bowels everyday although they are much thinner than my usual ones they are soft
I have a question for the small bowel obstruction support group. I hear that one shouldn't eat bread but I have a hard time not eating any bread and if I don't eat bread I am constantly hungry! So I do eat a bit as well as some small pastries which I know aren't meant to be good for the bland diet I am trying to follow. I am wondering if gluten free bread might be ok and if it would be better for SBO people like myself.
I have a hard time as well not eating pastries and bread. I will eat them in small portions and I will chew thoroughly, more than 20 chews each small bite. I am also careful to make sure that my bread or pastries has no more than 1-2 grams of fiber. So I will eat maybe one piece of white bread toast in the morning with some butter. I also take olive oil everyday at here is actually a study I found on the benefits of olive oil for SBO due to adhesions. Since I started taking olive oil I have not needed any miralax in about a month now and my discomfort has become less often and less intense.
