I have stomach related panic attacks, would love to get off prilosec
I have been on prilosec for most of my adult life to help keep me from have panic attacks triggered by my stomach. Is there any alternative treatments out there. I am concerned about the long term effects of prilosec.

I would opt for another opinion. There are other meds that can keep you from having a panic attack.
I have been on Prilosec since 1990 35 years and yes, there are some side effects to it such as bone loss but the good outweighs the bad in my case & I also am on a higher dose than normal. I take 40 mg 2 to 3 times a day but I have a disease called Zollinger Ellis syndrome. I make 10 times the amount of acid a normal person makes. There is no other medication for me so again you have to weigh the risks against the good. Good luck to you.
Hi @bubba66, welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! I am sorry you are having stomach problems and understand not wanting to take Prilosec. Like @indyjo commented, it is valuable for some situations but it may not be the best in your case.
I am definitely not a medically trained person but I have been trying to learn more about PPIs in general. I am not seeing where they are recommended to treat panic disorders. I see Mayo Clinic makes other recommendations that are described here: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/panic-attacks/diagnosis-treatment/drc-20376027
I understand you would like to find a different treatment. Are you working with a doctor that has ruled out other digestive problems? Have you tried any type of therapy or CBT?
Sorry I need to explain a bit more. What I have been told was my stomach acid had eroded the lining of my stomach at the esophagus stomach junction. The stomach acid was then allowed to come in contact with the vagal never setting off a panic attack. The issue is I am getting concerned about being on prilosec for such a long period. I have tried to.go off it 3 times and all resulted in a panic attack. I am hoping that there is something new that might help fix this without drugs.
Yes I have worked with many physicians
@bubba66, I think I understand a bit more. Thank you for clarifying.
I did a search from the Digestive Support Group home page and found discussions related to vagus nerve, where others : https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/digestive-gastrointestinal-problems/?search=Vagus%20nerve&index=discussions
Also, more refined search for vegus nerve and Prilosec: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/digestive-gastrointestinal-problems/?search=Vagus+nerve+Prilosec#discussion-listview
I related to your experience of working with many physicians. It wasn’t until I landed where I am now, at Mayo Clinic that I have been able to make progress with my own digestive challenges. It can get complicated and difficult to figure out what the next step should be. I am not sure where you live, but here is a nice list of GI options if you think you may benefit https://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals/rankings/gastroenterology-and-gi-surgery.
Are you having changing symptoms, or other symptoms?
