I have peripheral neuropathy.. More info on Central Sensitization?

Posted by MicheleG @collison, Aug 20 7:25am

I have PN, dealing with it for years. It began from spinal stenosis, twenty five years ago. I was prescribed pregabalin, in varying doses over the years. I was also taking prescription opioids for 23 years. Long story, involving six surgeries , total replacements of hips, knees, and, more recently, shoulders.
I have been free of opioids for three years, but was left with extreme OIH, opioid induced hyperalgesia... after discontinuation of opioids. Hyperalgesia has been poorly understood.
There are learned papers nowadays. This pain is called Central Sensitizarion.
I have been reducing my dosage of pregabalin, mainly because of the bizarre effect it has on my memory.
I just turned 82, I depend on a walker to get across the room. I do go out, I am an actor and singer, and am privileged to belong to a wonderful theatre company. My mind and creativity are in great working order. My gosh is lagging behind.
I find that being close to off of pregabalin is miserable. I'm taking 50mg 2 x's a day.
I hurt in new ways, it seems, and count this toward the lack of pregabalin.
I used to read about this topic in these pages, can't find anything of late.
Any shared concerns or thoughts?
I do meditate. On a waiting list for help with pain. We shall see.
I'm very interested in both alpha lipoic acid, and also what you're calling brain work, pain reduction... * can't remember the term. Is this an American phrase, I wonder. I'm in Canada. We still talk about Mindfulness!
I have written about these difficulties, not so much about pregabalin. I want it gone!! Thanks to all of you for your honest and very full telling of all aspects of so much suffering that's out there... in here, all of our "here's".
I believe in working on it. I don't quit... I do get a bit down on the hard days,,but there's so much beautiful in this life! May it shine , may it shine, may it shine!

It's me reacting to autocorrect saying my "gosh" is lagging behind. Meant to say, my "body" is lagging behind. My "gosh", well, gosh! it's fine!

Mayo has a central sensitization program. I have done it and it helps. It is self-guided. You might want to ask them about it. Wishing you well!

Hi @collison, you've received helpful into from @johnbishop and @mitfit. Mayo Clinic recognizes Central Sensitization Syndrome. Here is a helpful video from Mayo's Dr. Sletten describing CSS.
