What helps spinal stenosis besides surgery?

Posted by sakota9 (Joan) @sakota, Jul 17, 2020

I also suffer from bursitus in my hips so I go in for infections. The shots help both my hips and my back. Today, thought I would look for things on the internet and then discuss with my dr. I came across an article for a neuromd Its a device you wear on your back and helps with the pain. Its been FDA tested and approved. Has anyone checked this out. I don't know if insurance covers it or not ...... I am getting tired of the injections and those really are just a temporary solution. I'm 76 and don't think I want to go thru surgery and my dr said that doesn't really help. So if anyone has one of these things or know about them, would appreciate your input. Besides the back am also dealing with copd and lung cancer........Life is like a box of cherries......I just keep getting the sour ones......... Hope you all are doing ok......andhave God, family and friends as your everyday support...........

Also there are oral surgeons who can help w dental issues and give you comfort. I found 1 who scattered to cowards. And I never felt anything and made the procedure completely painless.

Hello. This is my first posting and I apologize in advance if I'm a little long winded. I'm just really terrified and would love some consult and/or experienced assistance. I have been dealing with a lot of compounding back issues. I have lumbar stenosis, cervical stenosis. In the last couple of years I have had physical therapy, injections. A surgeon I was referred to stated that I needed the surgery. I can't remember how to spell this. It consists of opening up my back and removing disks and fusing other parts together. I'm sorry I botched this whole thing up. Anyways, he informed me that as long as we delay the surgery my back will continue to affect the nerves and there's no way of repairing the already damaged nerves. I was also told that I couldn't have the surgery until I resolve my dental issues he wouldn't be able to do the surgery. Long story. I've been in a holding pattern for 2 years now. I can't go to a dentist. I won't go to a dentist. I'm a real child when it comes to this. Any ways, I'm having an MRI on the 20th of Dec. to update. I'm alone I have lost my dad and my mom to heart disease. Everyone else has gone. Anyone, who has read this so far are very patient. I appreciate that. I'm also a diabetic, arthritic. I have autoimmune disease and thyroid. I only mention these incase it made a difference. What I really need help with is the nightime pain in my arms at night that wakes me out of a sound sleep to sitting on the side of my bed crying and pacing the floor for half an hour till it subsides a little. Both of my feet are numb up to my shins. My hands are both swollen and hurting from the arthritis. Ok. I'm done. If anyone has any thoughts? I'm open. and I really am sorry to go on. This really the first time I've put all this out there. I read all the postings on your forum. It makes me feel a little less alone to know others are coping and I can too. Thank you!

Thank you for sharing your story with the spinal difficulty you experience. How heart-breaking.
Regarding the dentist, there are many compassion dentists out there, and they can administer an anesthetic to put you out during the procedures. If you cannot afford the cost where you live in the States, I recommend you travel to Algondondes, Mexico, near Yuma, Arizona. There are over 600 dentists there, trained in dentistry schools. I too was skeptical of traveling there, and was quite nervous, yet I received a recommendation from a friend in Phoenix, where I live. The procedure I had was a frontal bridge work, and the third time it to be replaced since 2000. They asked about an implant, of which I saw an oral surgeon years ago, and with braces to increase the space to allow an implant would take one year and more, plus the cost in 2000.
The name of the dentistry office in Algondondes is Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry Center with Jose A. Valenzuela DDS. His staff is good, and I asked for a relaxant which they gave me a 2 mg Xanax, something I never took. It did the trick. My husband had 6 crowns, he had one, and he couldn't stay awake. If you are not tolerate to medication, probably a 1 mg is best. They have the gas to put you out. The price is way lower than the States. Phone: 8662236147 or 9282573604. Good luck.

I have scoliosis which is gradually affecting more and more activities. I periodically have Physical Therapy to strengthen my core, and it does help. But I know this isn't a cure and the effects from having a crooked spine will only worsen with age. Is there anyone out there who can advise/comment? Thanks!

I have the Neuro MD device. It is a 20” treatment applied to your back. Similar to a Tens, it works well to temporarily eliminate back pain. It does not fix the underlying pathology of spine disease. Hoping you find some relief.

Yes they are convenient to use. I cannot go on without this device, only expensive for me and have to re order the replacement pads often if you are not careful in using them. But they really work for me.

I have stenosis plus some arthritis in my neck, causing constant pain there and down my shoulder and arm. Tried injections, which only helped couple weeks. Went to PT and that helped some, along with gabapentin and Tylenol arthritis. Surgery as discussed involving a procedure that would numb? Lasor? The nerve being compressed. I just can not face that as he said there was a 30% or higher chance my vocal chords would be effected since they do it going in through the mouth. I am a singer, I am 65 but my soprano voice is still string and true. I have a major role in my choir plus do solos, duets, quartets and sing at weddings, even funerals. It is not an option to take the risk, so I put up with the pain. Gardening hurts because I have to bend my head down a lot, but I love gardening so I do it with frequent breaks. So any suggestions of relief would be greatly appreciated.

Did you get an MRI and EMG to see the level of nerve involvement? I had C5-7 fusion and I use bands to do strength exercises, use 5-7 lb weights and go to physiotherapy. I have osteoporosis, and my C6-7 level did not fully fuse even after using a bone stimulator. I have some weakness but not too much pain. Good luck. The choices are difficult.

@gmav7914 TENS devices work by distracting your body to keep from focusing on pain. They do not cure anything. Sometimes it’s better to have surgery to fix a problem instead of living with it, but that choice can only be made with a surgeon. I am so glad I had my cervical fusion. I was loosing coordination in my arms, had pain all over my body and leg weakness and I didn’t want to become disabled.
