I am on Forteo injections. I beginning to think this is a money maker.
I’ve been on Forteo for about 4 to 5 months and all I’ve been having is flu like symptoms. I’m still on and off. I’ve been having the jaw pain teeth pain like all my teeth hurt, sensitive teeth, my legs. I had previous fracture in my legs from a car accident and my legs hurt, but this on this medication so much all my muscles, including in my arms hurt like everything hurts and I’m wondering now if there’s a natural way to do this I’m wondering if this is a money maker cause I’m seeing that a lot of people are saying that these things do not help cure anything they just help maintain but a lot of people are having more breaks and then once you’re up, it really gets worse because they say that it like regresses after you get off the medication or injections so what good is that if I’m taking an injection and then I get off the injection and start taking natural stuff it’s saying that it regresses your bones more so what’s the sense of being on it if it’s gonna make it worse in the end I don’t wanna go on reclast, or prolia i’ve had many kidney problems in the past and I have an autoimmune disorder with thyroid, graves, disease, and just worrying about all this it’s just like I’m wondering if I should just go on like algaecal or goat, milk powder or something more natural because I just feel like this is a money market like they’re making you take these injections. They get get money and parts out of it, but it really is not doing anything. People who’ve been on this injections and medication stuff have known to have more fractures, loose teeth, job pain, all kinds of dental problems. I mean all kinds and I’m just wondering if it’s even worth it is it better just to take proper calcium D3, and K2’s and stuff I don’t know what to do and I cannot take calcium bicarbonate because that causes kidney stones and I almost had kidney failure because of all my kidney stones. I haven’t had any in a long time and I don’t want anymore and I’m just trying to figure out what to do anybody have any help with natural stuff instead of injections that are actually working and I’m hearing too that the DEXA scans aren’t accurate either I don’t know what to think and I don’t know what to believe any input please thank you

May I ask how old you are and what your dexa scores are.
There are a number of sub categories under Osteoporosis that address the issue of different approaches to trying to treat osteoporosis. I would encourage you to review the posts that many have offered.
A side note. I took forteo for the full two years and had moderate gains and no noticeable side effects. It is true that those gains can be lost if one does not follow it with a med that stop or slow down the natural process of bone turnover.
There is enormous wisdom here. We are all different and this is not a one size fits all process.

7 Reactions@gravity3 I am 63 years old my DEXA scans were -3.5-, -2.5 and -4.5 I have a lot of side effects from this, but she wants me to stay on this and then she wants me to change over to rec class or Paul but I can’t take them because I also have kidney issues. I have an autoimmune disorder on top of that and thyroid disorder the problem is I noticed that I have a lot more cramping in my legs and arms. I’m having jaw pain that’s killing me. It’s like right in where the teeth is acting in the jaws. It hurts so Bad and I talked to my doctor about it and she just told me that if I want to stop I can stop and then go on the prolia or the reclast but both of them are very bad on your kidneys and stuff and autoimmune and I can’t. I can’t do that but if I stop taking the Forteo or I do the two years and deal with all the pain that I’m having they say that your bones can go back to being worse than what it was to start with. I’m not sure about that but then I hear people who take like algae cal and other stuff are doing better on their scans so I don’t know. But I’ll be 64 in a couple months. I don’t know what to think. I don’t know what’s really anything sometimes I feel like this is a marketing scam. I don’t know, but I’d like to do a lot of things naturally now I heard that goat milk powder or goat milk is actually better than a lot of them just drinking goat milk is way better than regular calcium milk or any of them and then my doctor told me to stay away from the calcium and just take homemade spinach and all that stuff and eat that better calcium than pills cause you don’t really know it’s in these calcium pills but I heard that like algae cow and I have ocean organic or organic ocean or something like that they are more natural and they are better for you so I’m not sure but I do not feel good being on this injection whatsoever. I keep getting like flu like symptoms, pain unbelievable. The pain is unbelievable. It’s just like in the legs in the arms in the jaw my teeth hurt like and these are side effects cause I called up the company and asked them about it because my Dr Office does not know much. She’s not really paying attention to what I’m doing.

2 Reactionsvmcgrantham, I'm sorry that you are having so much trouble with Forteo. You might ask your doctor if they can switch you to Tymlos. Some people are simply allergic to Forteo. It may be excess calcium that could be resolved by lowering calcium or d supplements. Is your doctor monitoring calcium levels. Are you getting bone markers so that at least you know whether the drug is working for you.
Forteo can raise levels of uric acid. You might want those levels tested because some medications that raise uric acid levels cause pseudogout.
You can raise bone density some with "natural" remedies. With your -4.5 it would be a scary risk for fracture.
One person on this site couldn't tolerate Forteo, but managed on Tymlos.
I hope your doctor can help you find some answers.

1 ReactionOK, so maybe you need a consult and a change of medication...How is this a money maker??? If you don't have an endocrinologist you trust, think about changing.

1 ReactionIf you have kidney issues and/or stones—beware of what meds or supplements you take—many are very hard on kidneys and too much added calcium can cause stones…having both kidney and bone issues is quite complicated and requires great care. I am borderline/mild in both and trying not to make things worse as I age—will see my primary in 2 months and try to sort this out, perhaps requiring a specialist.
@sstopalian i’ll have an endocrinologist for that. I have an endocrinologist for my thyroid, but I see a rheumatologist doctor for this so I don’t know why they sent me to rheumatoid Dr I already have a endocrinologist
YOU need an endocrinologist who is a specialist in bone problems and osteoporosis. Differen specialists.
Thank you I will try to talk to my endocrinologist
@vmcgrantham, endocrinologist and rheumatologists have specializations. Even though both disciplines treat osteoporosis, it is really difficult to stay on top of research and protocol for even one malady. Rheumatologists seem to specialize in autoimmune spectrums which is vast. Endocrinologists seem more vested in diabetes and thyroid disorders. Some few specialize in osteoporosis.
Your rheumatologist may feel a little put upon to handle osteoporosis. I see osteoporosis as primarily an endocrine disorder and would fall under the endocrinologist purview.
Forteo is definitely a money maker.
Forteo and Tymlos build the best most integrated most flexible--able to bear impact without fracture bone. Usually they are the most expensive osteoporosis medications, which is the reason why you can't get Forteo through the public health system unless you've had a fracture. And you can't get Tymlos In the [UK public healthcare system.}
Your endocrinologist might be happy to treat your osteoporosis. Maybe call the endocrinologist's office and ask staff if they treat osteoporosis.
