I am going to start Alpha Lipoic Acid @600 mg/d to determine...

if it is effective to address pain in feet from peripheral neuropathy. Should I expect to see a drop in levels of B-12 in serum? Should I begin supplementation now of B-12? What is consensus on this?

I've been taking Alpha Lipoic Acid for a few weeks now after my Dr. recommended it, but he told me to take 600mg twice a day.
I think it is actually making a difference in the pain.
I've been taking a vitamin B supplement for years, and my bloodwork has been good.

I have been taking on a daily basis 600 mg of ALA for about 4 years and it did not impact my level of B-12 which my primary doctor does check twice a year. Since a proper level of B-12 is important, might be a good idea to ask your doctor to check your current level of B-12 and then monitor it periodically.

Does it matter what time of day you take your daily 600mg of ALA? My pain is worse when I lie down to sleep at night and when I wake up during the night. I have been taking 300mg of Gabapentin before going to bed at night and that has helped ease the pain somewhat.

I take 600 mg of ALA with breakfast and then with a snack before bed. What a great excuse to have a snack at night! I do my best to take it with food less stomach issues for me. About an hour before bed, I will have a snack and take 600 mg. at that time as well. You are fortunate you can take Gabapentin. It seems to help a lot of folks.

The ALA is giving me bad heartburn so i can’t take it on empty stomach as recommended.
Haven’t notice B12 effects, but will follow it now.

During my research of what to take for my polyneuropathy I learned from Dr Emily Splichal’s book Barefoot Strong that it has to be R-ALA instead of regular ALA: “Touted as one of the most powerful anti-oxidants, alpha lipoic acid has been shown to improve microcirculation to peripheral nerves while decreasing oxidative stress. A key point about alpha lipoic acid is that it must be taken in the R-lipoic acid form as the “R” form is the one that is biologically active (vs. “S” form).”

Initially I took it mornings and evening, but to be supportive of my silent reflux I now take the whole dosage in the morning.

It does. It works best if taken cca one hour before going to bed. I take 300 mg Gabapentin as well. Both work very well 😁

Every three years, I have an EGD done due to acid reflux and Barrett's. I've been on Omeprazole and Sucralfate for about 15 years and these two meds have worked well with no issues and clear tests.
